Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Headline/Title: "She begged her daughter on her knees... but the truth was already out."

I looked toward the back of the church. Two elderly men in severe grey suits stood up. One of them held a leather ledger.

"Mrs. Holloway," the older of the two men spoke in a stern, aristocratic voice. "Is this true? Is the child’s name not Charles?"

Margaret sprinted down the aisle toward them, dropping her designer handbag. "Mr. Vance! Please! It’s a minor family misunderstanding! The parents are just emotional! Look at the favors! Look at the birth announcement!"

She frantically grabbed a white embroidered blanket from my aunt’s hands and shoved it into the trustee’s chest. "See? Charles! The favors say Charles! The cake says Charles!"

"Favors don't constitute a legal identity, Mrs. Holloway," the trustee replied coldly. "We came here today expecting to witness the official baptism of Charles Holloway's heir. It appears you have attempted to execute a massive financial fraud using the Church and your own grandchild."

"No! No! Please!" Margaret dropped to her knees right in the middle of the aisle, clutching the trustee’s trousers. The woman who had spent her entire life looking down on everyone was now kneeling in the dirt of her own lies. "Give me one week! I will convince them! Emily will change the birth certificate! Emily, tell them!"

She turned on her knees, looking at me with bloodshot, desperate eyes. "Emily! My baby girl! Please! If you don't do this, they will repossess my house! They will take my car! I’ll be ruined! You can just change his name legally next year! Just let the priest say 'Charles' today!"

I stood by the altar, holding my sleeping son. Looking at her kneeling there, I realized something terrifying: I felt no pity. Only disgust.

"You called my husband’s father a failure," I said softly, my voice carrying across the silent church. "You tried to erase his memory to feed your greed. You treated my baby like a pawn in your game."

"Emily, please!" she sobbed, tears ruining her expensive makeup.

"My son's name is Lucas Arthur Vance," I said clearly, staring straight into the eyes of the trust executors. "And as long as I am breathing, he will never carry a single cent—or a single name—that belongs to Margaret Holloway."

The principal trustee nodded gravely. "Thank you for your honesty, Mrs. Vance. The Holloway Trust is officially dissolved. The remaining assets will be liquidated to pay off Mrs. Holloway's creditors."

"NOOOOO!" Margaret shrieked, a sound so guttural it gave me chills.

She lunged off the floor, charging toward me like a wild animal. "You ungrateful little brat! I gave you life!"

Before she could reach me, Daniel blocked her, catching her wrists. At the same time, two uniformed police officers—who had followed my father into the church—stepped forward and restrained her.

"Margaret Holloway," one officer announced, pulling her hands behind her back. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, document forgery, and wire fraud."

"Let go of me! Do you know who I am?!" she screamed, struggling against the cuffs as the congregation watched in frozen horror.

As they marched her down the aisle, she locked eyes with my father. "You set me up, Richard! You ruined me!"

"You ruined yourself ten years ago, Margaret," my father said quietly. "I just brought the receipts."

The heavy church doors closed behind her, cutting off her hysterical screaming.

The church was silent again.

Father Michael breathed a long sigh, looking at Daniel and me. "My dear children... I am deeply sorry for this desecration of holy sanctuary."

"It's okay, Father," I whispered, holding my baby tight.

"If you are still willing," Father Michael said gently, "we can perform a true, private baptism for young Lucas Arthur right now. Without the cameras, without the fraud. Just pure faith and love."

I looked at Daniel. He smiled, a tear slipping down his cheek. "We would love that, Father."

We thought the nightmare was over. But as the private service ended, Daniel’s phone buzzed in his pocket. A text message from an unknown number appeared on his screen:

"You think taking down Margaret saves you? Check your firm's bank account. Daniel Vance is next."
