Chapter 7 - Mother’s Final Play

Headline/Title: "She walked out of police custody in two hours... and brought an army with her."

"How is she out?!" I gasped, staring at the monitor in utter disbelief. "She was arrested in front of fifty people!"

"Callahan," my father said through gritted teeth. "He bought her bail through a corrupt judge within an hour. She made a deal with him: she gets him Arthur Vance’s secret files, and Callahan wipes her debt clean."

Through the external audio feed on the security monitors, Margaret’s voice boomed through a megaphone outside the warehouse.

"Emily! Daniel! I know you’re in there!" her voice echoed, dripping with sickening arrogance. "Stop playing the victims! Hand over Arthur's ledger and my grandson, and I will tell the Police Chief to drop the federal conspiracy charges against Daniel!"

"She's insane!" Daniel yelled. "She thinks she can bargain with us after everything she's done?!"

"You have five minutes, Emily!" Margaret screamed through the speaker. "If you don't come out, the Chief is going to breach the building under the pretext of a armed hostage situation! They will open fire, and you know who will get hurt!"

"She’s going to order a tactical breach," my father said, his face pale. "They'll shoot first and ask questions later to cover up Callahan’s tracks."

"No," I said softly.

Daniel looked at me. "Emily, what are you doing?"

I wiped my tears, unbuckled Lucas from his carrier, and handed him gently to Daniel. "Keep him in the vault. Lock the steel door behind me."

"Emily, no! You can't go out there!" Daniel begged, holding my arm. "She’s dangerous!"

"She’s my mother," I said, my voice eerily calm, filled with a cold, terrifying strength I didn't know I possessed. "She spent twenty-six years playing chess with my life. It’s time I ended the game."

"Emily, wait!" my father called out.

I walked to the control panel, grabbed a small black USB drive containing all of my father's gathered evidence, and slid it into my pocket. Then, I stepped out of the vault and shut the heavy steel door, locking Daniel and Lucas safely inside.

I walked toward the main garage door. My heart was pounding like a drum, but my hands were completely steady.

I hit the button to raise the heavy metal garage door.

Daylight flooded into the dim warehouse. Standing fifty feet away was a line of six police cruisers, ten armed tactical officers with rifles pointed at me, and in the middle stood Margaret Holloway, flanked by Police Chief Henderson and Frank Callahan himself.

Margaret smiled tightly, stepping forward. "Where is the baby, Emily? Where is Charles?"

"His name is Lucas," I said, stepping into the open sunlight. "And you will never see him again."

"Don't be dramatic, darling," Margaret sneered, adjusting her pristine coat. "You lost. The police are on my side. The law is on my side. Give Callahan the ledger, sign over legal guardianship of the boy to me so I can clear the trust paperwork, and I might let Daniel serve his prison sentence in a low-security facility."

"You really think you've won, don't you, Margaret?" I asked.

"I always win, Emily," she said proudly. "I built this family. I control everything."

"You forgot one thing," I said, pulling out my phone.

"What's that?" she scoffed.

"When you staged that elaborate baptism this morning," I smiled coldly, "you hired a professional videographer to film the entire ceremony for your social media legacy page, right?"

Margaret’s smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"The videographer was audio-synced to the church's wireless microphone," I said. "Every word you said—about forging the documents, about the trust money, about framing Daniel—was recorded in crystal-clear 4K audio."

Margaret’s face turned white. "You... you didn't..."

"And while you were spending the last two hours getting bailed out," I continued, holding up my phone screen, "I uploaded the raw footage to a live stream. It currently has 4.2 million views on Facebook and Twitter."
