Chapter 5 - Shadow of the Syndicate

Headline/Title: "When fake Marshals showed up, she made a choice that changed EVERYTHING."

My instincts as a mother kicked in instantly. "Touch my baby and I swear to God you won't leave this parking lot alive!" I screamed, pulling Lucas behind me.

"Federal Marshals don't carry zip-ties, pal," my father sneered.

In a fraction of a second, my father pulled a small pepper-spray canister from his pocket and blasted the lead man straight in the face.

The man shrieked, clutching his eyes.

"RUN!" my father yelled.

Daniel grabbed my hand, and we sprinted toward my father’s classic Volvo parked near the side entrance. Behind us, the other two men drew silenced pistols from their coats.

Pfft! Pfft!

The side mirror of the Volvo shattered into a thousand pieces as a bullet tore through it. I screamed, hugging Lucas to my chest as Daniel shoved me into the back seat and dived into the front beside my father.

My father slammed the car into reverse, tires screeching against the asphalt, before flipping the wheel and roaring out of the parking lot just as more shots clipped the rear bumper.

"Hold on!" my father yelled, weaving the car through afternoon traffic down the highway toward downtown Columbus.

"Who were those men?!" Daniel panted, bleeding slightly from a glass cut on his forehead. "They weren't federal agents!"

"They work for Frank Callahan," my father explained, his eyes glued to the rearview mirror. "Callahan is the head of the syndicate Margaret got involved with. He’s the one who backed her loans. Now that Margaret failed to secure the trust money through Lucas's baptism, Callahan is coming to collect his collateral—and he thinks you have his money, Daniel."

"I don't have his money!" Daniel yelled in frustration. "I'm an architect! I design schools and community centers!"

"Margaret used your digital signature," I said, realization hitting me like a physical blow. "Remember two months ago when she came over to 'help' us with our tax forms? She asked for your laptop to print out some documents!"

"She copied my private key..." Daniel whispered, his face going completely ghost-white. "She framed me. She deliberately set up a paper trail so if she got caught, I would take the fall and go to prison for twenty years!"

Lucas began crying hysterically in the back seat, terrified by the chaotic noise. I rocked him furiously, tears blurring my vision. "Shh, baby, shh... mommy’s here. It's okay, Lucas..."

"Where are we going, Dad?" I asked, looking out the back window. The two black SUVs were still following us, weaving aggressively through traffic three cars behind.

"To the one place Margaret never thought I’d keep," my father said, stepping on the gas. "The original Holloway vault in the old industrial district. But first, we need to strip your phones."

"Why?" Daniel asked.

"Because Margaret put a tracking chip in your baby’s diaper bag during the church setup," my father revealed.

I froze. I looked down at the luxury leather diaper bag sitting at my feet—a gift Margaret had insisted on buying us three weeks ago.

I unzipped the front pocket, jammed my fingers into the lining, and pulled out a sleek, coin-sized silver GPS tracker.

"She didn't just want to control my baby's name," I whimpered, staring at the flashing red light on the device. "She was tracking my family's every move."
