Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Legacy

Headline/Title: "They thought the drama ended at the altar... then the anonymous text arrived."
The text message sent a chill through my veins. Daniel showed me his phone screen outside the church while my father helped load Lucas's stroller into our trunk.
"What does this mean?" I whispered, my heart pounding again. "Who sent this?"
Daniel rubbed his face, his complexion pale. "I don't know, Emily. But Margaret was right about one thing—she funded the initial launch of my architecture firm three years ago. If her finances are being seized by federal prosecutors..."
"Then your firm’s accounts might be frozen too," my father said, coming up behind us. His face was grave.
"Dad," I said, turning to him. "How deep does this go? What did Margaret actually do?"
Richard looked at the quiet church parking lot, making sure no one was listening. "Margaret didn't work alone, Emily. She was involved with a high-profile real estate syndicate in Columbus. They used fake trusts and forged land deeds to buy up historic properties. She wasn't just broke—she was laundering money for some very dangerous people."
Daniel’s phone rang. It was his business partner, Marcus.
Daniel picked up on speaker. "Marcus? What’s going on?"
"Daniel, where the hell are you?!" Marcus’s voice was frantic, sirens blaring in the background of his call. "The FBI just raided our main office! They have a warrant for your arrest!"
"My arrest?!" Daniel gasped. "For what?!"
"They’re saying our firm was used as a front to wash five million dollars from the Holloway Trust! They found your signature on shell company documents registered in the Cayman Islands!"
"I never signed anything like that!" Daniel shouted.
"It doesn't matter! The paper trail leads directly to your office desk!" Marcus panicked. "Daniel, get out of there! They’re tracking your phone!"
Daniel dropped his phone onto the asphalt. It cracked.
I grabbed his arm, terror seizing my chest. "Daniel, no! You didn't do this!"
"Margaret did," my father said bitterly. "She didn't just want Lucas’s name for the money. She framed Daniel as a backup plan. If her baptism stunt failed, she planned to pin the entire financial collapse on Daniel, claiming he stole the money from her trust."
"She’s a monster!" I cried out. "She's my mother! How could she destroy my husband, my baby's father?!"
"Because to Margaret, people are only tools or obstacles," my father replied. "Listen to me carefully. The police who took Margaret are legit, but the syndicate backing her has eyes inside the local department. You can't go home tonight."
Just then, two black SUVs sped around the corner of the street, pulling up abruptly in front of St. Andrew’s Church. Tinted windows. Unmarked plates.
Three men in dark suits stepped out, walking deliberately toward us.
"Richard Vance?" the lead man asked, his voice cold and devoid of emotion. "And Daniel Vance?"

My father stepped in front of us, reaching into his coat. "Who sent you? Frank Callahan?"
The lead man didn't answer. He reached inside his jacket, pulling out a badge—and a pair of zip-ties. "Federal Marshals. You're all coming with us. Especially the baby."
