Chapter 2 - A Web of Filthy Lies

Viral Hook: He thought money could buy a new identity, but blood leaves a trail that wealth can’t erase.Inside the grand, rustic living room of the ranch, the air was thick with tension. Rosa sat on the wooden bench, holding little Sofía tightly against her chest. Mateo stood protectively in front of his mother, his young eyes staring at his father with a heartbreaking blend of love and betrayal.
Mauricio paced the room, his mind racing. He had spent years planning this climb up the social ladder. He had changed his name, falsified documents, and charmed Valeria, knowing that her father, Don Alejandro, owned vast, incredibly valuable lands that were primed for commercial development. His plan was to marry Valeria, inherit the ranching empire, and build an elite luxury resort over the very dirt he had grown up on.
"Let’s cut the theater," Mauricio said, shifting his strategy from denial to arrogance. He pulled out a sleek silk handkerchief and wiped his brow. "Fine. I know her. Rosa was a woman from my hometown. We had a brief, regrettable past. But it ended years ago. She’s obsessed, Valeria. She’s tracking me down to extort money from us because she knows I’m about to marry into one of the most prestigious families in Jalisco."
"A brief past?!" Rosa gasped, standing up so fast that Sofía whimpered. "We were married in the church of San Juan, Mauricio! We lived together for nine years! You left eight months ago, telling me you were going to buy supplies for the winter. You took our life savings—the money we saved from my tortilla stall—and you never returned!"
Valeria crossed her arms, her eyes darting between them. The sheer embarrassment was suffocating her, but she refused to accept that she had been conned. "Do you have proof, woman? Anyone can claim a marriage. Where are your papers?"
Rosa lowered her head, tears spilling down her dirty cheeks. "Your cousin, Mauricio’s cousin, who rented us the room... when he threw me out onto the street because I wouldn't let him touch me... he burned all my belongings. He burned the marriage certificate. He said Mauricio ordered him to erase any trace of us."
Mauricio smirked slightly, a cold, calculated expression. "See? No proof. Just the desperate fabrications of a homeless woman looking for a payday. Valeria, my love, you believe me, don't you? Look at her, look at me. We operate in different worlds."
Don Alejandro walked slowly over to a massive oak desk in the corner of the room. He unlocked a heavy iron drawer and pulled out a leather-bound folder.
"You’re right about one thing, Mauro—or whatever your real name is," Alejandro said softly, pulling out a set of official documents. "Different worlds have a funny way of colliding. Valeria, do you remember why you haven't seen me in two years?"
Valeria shifted uncomfortably. "Because you refused to sell the southern valley to the development firm I represent."

"Exactly," Alejandro said, his eyes locking onto Mauricio like a hawk. "The development firm called Apex Luxury Group. The firm owned by a mysterious young CEO named Mauricio Estrada. I did a background check on that firm six months ago, Valeria. Want to guess whose real name is listed on the original tax registry before it was illegally wiped?"
Mauricio’s breath caught in his throat. The room grew deadly cold.
