Chapter 5 - Justice in the High Valley

Viral Hook: You can run from your past, but you can’t outrun the law when a righteous man holds the gavel. The courtyard was quickly flooded with state police vehicles, their red and blue lights flashing against the rustic stone walls of the ranch. Commander Silva, a stern man and a long-time friend of Don Alejandro, marched into the living room with four armed officers.

"Mauricio Estrada, also known as Mauro Castelo," Commander Silva announced, producing a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, identity theft, document forgery, and child abandonment under aggravating circumstances."

Mauricio panicked. He made a desperate break for the rear glass doors leading to the gardens, but Capitán lunged forward with a fierce bark, blocking the exit. Mauricio tripped over a heavy rug, crashing hard onto the floor—the exact spot where Rosa’s water pitcher had shattered earlier. He lay there, surrounded by broken glass and spilled water, his expensive suit stained and torn.

The officers quickly pinned him down, slapping heavy iron handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Valeria! Help me!" Mauricio screamed as he was dragged to his feet, his composure completely shattered. "Tell them it’s a mistake! Use your connections!"

Valeria didn't even look up. She kept her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking with the bitter realization of her own blindness.

As the officers dragged Mauricio past Rosa, he stopped, staring at her with venomous eyes. "You ruined me," he hissed. "You and these miserable brats. I should have never left you alive."

Mateo stepped in front of his mother, his chin held high. "You didn't leave us to rot, Dad. You left us so we could find a real man to show us what a father looks like." He looked back at Don Alejandro, his young eyes filled with profound gratitude.

Don Alejandro walked up to Mauricio, looking down at him with absolute pity. "The land always reclaims what belongs to it, Mauricio. You came from the mud, and because of your greed, you will spend the next twenty years staring at concrete walls. Take him away."

The police dragged the screaming con man out into the courtyard, throwing him into the back of a police cruiser before speeding away, leaving nothing but a cloud of dust in their wake.
