CHAPTER 2 — "The Hospital Didn't Want Him To Open Her Medical File."

Doctors rushed Evelyn into the emergency room.

Lily sat silently beside Ethan, holding her teddy bear tighter than ever.

Minutes felt like hours.

Finally, a physician walked toward him.

"Mr. Parker..."

"We stabilized your wife."

Relief washed over Ethan—

Until the doctor hesitated.

"...but something doesn't make sense."

"What?"

"The tests don't match a heart attack."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"What are you saying?"

The doctor lowered his voice.

"Your wife has traces of a rare toxin."

"Toxin?"

"It doesn't occur naturally."

Someone had poisoned her.

Before Ethan could respond, two men in expensive suits entered the hallway.

Neither wore hospital badges.

One calmly approached the nurses' station.

"We're here for Mrs. Evelyn Parker's records."

The nurse looked confused.

"You don't have authorization."

The man smiled.

"We'll take care of the paperwork."

Ethan instinctively stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The men ignored him completely.

Seconds later...

The hospital computer screen suddenly went black.

Every file connected to Evelyn disappeared.

The doctor stared in disbelief.

"I... I can't access anything."

Someone had remotely erased her medical history.

Lily quietly tugged on Ethan's sleeve.

"Daddy..."

She pointed toward the teddy bear she had refused to let go all day.

"Mommy hid something."

Ethan unzipped the bear.

Inside wasn't cotton.

It was a tiny flash drive.

Across its surface were six handwritten words.

ONLY OPEN IF THEY FIND ME.

Ethan's hands trembled.

He plugged it into his laptop.

One single video file appeared.

He clicked PLAY.

Evelyn's frightened face filled the screen.

"If you're watching this..."

May you like

"...they finally came for me."
