CHAPTER 3 — “The Woman in the Video Wasn’t His Wife Anymore.”
Ethan watched the screen, barely blinking.
Evelyn’s face was pale. Her eyes were swollen, as if she had been crying for days before recording the video.
“If you’re watching this,” she whispered, “then they finally found me.”
Ethan’s hand tightened around the laptop.
“They told me if I ever told you the truth, they would take Lily.”
His heart stopped.
Lily.
Evelyn looked over her shoulder in the video, terrified.
“Ethan… Lily is not just our daughter.”
The hospital room went silent.
“She is the only living witness to what happened five years ago.”
Ethan’s breath became uneven.
Five years ago, Evelyn had disappeared for three months during their marriage. She said she had gone to care for her sick aunt. Ethan had believed her.
Now he knew that was a lie.
Evelyn continued.
“There was a clinical trial. Children were being used. Powerful people were paying to erase the evidence.”
Ethan stared at Lily, who was asleep beside him, still holding the teddy bear.
“And Lily saw everything.”
Suddenly, the hospital lights flickered.
The laptop screen went black.
Then one sentence appeared.
WE KNOW YOU OPENED IT.
