CHAPTER 8 — “The DNA Test Destroyed Everything Ethan Believed.”

Gunshots echoed through the cabin.
Glass shattered.
Furniture splintered.
Ethan wrestled the masked man while the two little girls clung to opposite corners of the room, each crying the same words.
"Daddy!"
"Daddy, it's me!"
They looked identical.
Their voices were identical.
Even Evelyn couldn't tell them apart.
The masked man laughed through his broken mask.
"You finally understand."
"There were never experiments to create perfect children."
"There were experiments to replace them."
Police sirens wailed in the distance.
The masked man pulled a small envelope from his jacket and threw it at Ethan before escaping into the forest.
Inside was a laboratory report.
CONFIDENTIAL DNA ANALYSIS
Father: Ethan Parker.
Mother: Evelyn Parker.
Child A: 99.99% Match.
Child B: 99.99% Match.
Ethan stared at the results in disbelief.
Impossible.
Both girls were biologically his daughter.
"There has to be a mistake..."
Evelyn slowly shook her head.
"There isn't."
Eight years earlier...
She had given birth to identical twin daughters.
One had supposedly died during a mysterious laboratory fire.
But she had been lied to.
Both babies survived.
One was raised by Evelyn.
The other was raised by the organization.
Before Ethan could process the truth, the "other" girl stepped forward.
She looked directly into his eyes.
Then she quietly said the one sentence that shattered Evelyn completely.
"They told me..."
"...Mommy asked them to take me away."
Evelyn fell to her knees.
"No..."
"I spent eight years trying to find you."
The little girl didn't cry.
She simply reached into her pocket and handed Ethan a tiny silver key.
On it was engraved:
VAULT 27
Then she whispered,
"My real name isn't Lily."
"It's..."
Before she could finish, a sniper's laser sight appeared on her tiny chest.

A shot rang out through the night.
