CHAPTER 6 – The Boy Who Inherited a Dead Man's Legacy

Smoke poured through the shattered boardroom as alarms echoed across the skyscraper.

Employees rushed toward the emergency exits.

Federal agents surrounded Richard Langston.

But Richard never moved.

He kept one protective arm around the frightened little boy.

"No one touches him," Richard ordered.

The agents hesitated.

Victoria couldn't take her eyes off the antique brass key hanging from the boy's neck.

It was impossible.

Daniel Brooks had worn that exact key every day.

She had buried him with it.

"Who is that child?" Victoria whispered.

Richard slowly stood.

"This..."

"...is Noah Brooks."

The room froze.

Adrian's jaw dropped.

Emily covered her mouth.

Victoria felt the blood drain from her face.

"No..."

"Daniel never had a son."

Richard looked directly at her.

"That's because you never knew."

Twenty-three years earlier, just weeks before the factory explosion, Daniel had secretly become a father.

Fearing that powerful investors would use his family against him, Daniel asked Richard—his closest friend—to keep the child's existence hidden until the company was safe.

"But after the explosion," Richard said quietly, "everything changed."

"You believed Daniel was dead."

"The police closed the case."

"And I realized someone inside the company wanted every member of the Brooks family erased forever."

Victoria's voice trembled.

"So... you raised him?"

Richard nodded.

"I became the monster everyone feared..."

"...so the real monsters would never look for him."

Silence filled the room.

For the first time, Richard didn't look like a ruthless billionaire.

He looked like an exhausted old man carrying a promise for more than two decades.

Then Noah reached into his backpack.

"I think... this belongs to you."

He handed Victoria a small leather notebook.

She recognized it instantly.

Daniel's journal.

The notebook she had searched for every single day since the explosion.

With shaking hands, she opened the first page.

Every page contained blueprints for a revolutionary clean-energy technology.

But the final page wasn't about business.

It was a letter.

Addressed to Victoria.

She read the final lines aloud through tears.

"If you're reading this, something happened to me. Never blame yourself. The only thing I ask is this: protect our son. One day, he'll need both his family... and the truth."

Victoria's knees gave out.

"Our... son?"

Noah looked at her, confused.

Richard closed his eyes.

"I never wanted you to learn the truth like this."

"You aren't just Daniel's business partner."

"You were his wife."

"And Noah..."

He gently placed a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"...is your son."

Victoria burst into tears as twenty-three years of lies collapsed around her.

She reached toward Noah.

The little boy hesitated...

Then slowly took her hand.

It should have been the happiest reunion imaginable.

But at that exact moment, one of the investigators shouted from the hallway.

"Everyone get down!"

"There wasn't just one bomb!"

"We've found another explosive..."

May you like

"...and the countdown says 60 seconds."
