CHAPTER 8 – The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Victoria replayed the security footage over and over.

The timestamp never changed.

11:57 p.m.

A lonely train station on the coast.

Adrian Cole stepped onto the train...

...and beside him walked Daniel Brooks.

The man declared dead twenty-three years ago.

"No..."

Victoria whispered.

"This can't be real."

The federal investigators immediately tracked the train's destination.

A remote island known only as Black Harbor.

No permanent residents.

No tourist maps.

Just one abandoned research facility that officially hadn't operated in over two decades.

Forty-eight hours later...

Victoria, Noah, Emily, Richard, and a tactical FBI team landed on the island.

The laboratory looked frozen in time.

Dust covered every machine.

Old computers still hummed quietly.

Then they heard voices.

Victoria pushed open the final steel door.

Inside...

Daniel Brooks stood in front of a wall of blueprints.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Scarred across one side of his face.

But unmistakably alive.

Noah stared at him in disbelief.

"Dad...?"

Daniel slowly turned around.

The moment he saw Noah...

Tears filled his eyes.

"I've waited twenty-three years to hear someone call me that."

Victoria ran toward him.

She stopped just inches away.

Instead of hugging him...

She slapped him across the face.

The sound echoed through the laboratory.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"You let our son grow up without a father."

"You watched me spend half my life searching for answers."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

"And I'll regret it until the day I die."

Adrian stepped forward.

"She deserves the truth."

Daniel nodded.

"The explosion didn't kill me."

"It was supposed to."

"But Richard got me out before the building collapsed."

"My injuries were severe."

"While I recovered..."

"We discovered something far worse than attempted murder."

He walked toward an enormous steel vault.

Inside were thousands of classified files.

Photographs.

Government contracts.

Corporate records.

Names of senators, billionaires, judges, and global CEOs.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

"Cole Dynamics was never the real target."

"The energy technology we created..."

"...could have destroyed a trillion-dollar industry."

Powerful people wanted it buried forever.

Richard protected Noah.

Daniel disappeared.

Adrian secretly began gathering evidence from inside the company.

Everything they had suffered...

Every betrayal...

Every lie...

Had been part of a war far bigger than any of them imagined.

Then the laboratory lights suddenly turned red.

An automated voice echoed through the building.

"Unauthorized access detected."

"Self-destruct sequence activated."

"Five minutes until total facility destruction."

Everyone looked at Daniel.

He didn't seem surprised.

Instead...

He smiled sadly.

"I was hoping we'd have more time."

Then he pressed a hidden switch beneath the desk.

A massive steel drawer slowly opened.

Inside lay hundreds of identical black folders.

Each one carried the same title.

PROJECT PHOENIX

Victoria picked up the first folder.

Inside...

She found a list.

Hundreds of names.

Every person who had ever tried to expose the conspiracy.

Some names had a red stamp.

DECEASED.

Others had another stamp.

MISSING.

Then Noah quietly pointed to the last page.

Victoria followed his finger...

...and felt her heart stop.

At the very bottom of the list...

One final name had just been added moments ago.

NOAH BROOKS
