CHAPTER 1 – The Night He Packed His Future

The Manhattan skyline glittered beneath the rain, but inside the luxury penthouse, everything was falling apart.

Emily Carter knelt on the hardwood floor, carefully folding the last of her husband's shirts into the suitcase he'd asked her to pack.

Every piece of clothing felt heavier than the last.

Not because of the fabric.

Because every shirt carried a memory.

Five years earlier, Jason Carter had promised her forever under a quiet autumn sky.

Now he couldn't even look her in the eyes.

The elevator chimed.

Jason stepped into the apartment carrying another woman's designer handbag.

Behind him stood Vanessa.

Young.

Elegant.

Confident.

She walked through Emily's home as if she'd already bought it.

Jason placed the suitcase beside the front door.

"I'll only take what's mine."

Emily laughed quietly.

It wasn't happiness.

It was the sound a heart made when it finally broke.

"What's yours?" she whispered.

"The clothes I washed?"

"The company I helped build?"

"The apartment we paid for together?"

Or...

"The promises?"

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Oh please."

"This drama is exhausting."

Jason avoided Emily's stare.

"This marriage ended a long time ago."

Emily slowly stood.

"If that's true..."

"Why couldn't you leave before you fell in love with someone else?"

Silence.

The city lights reflected in the enormous windows while nobody dared answer.

Then Vanessa wrapped her arm around Jason.

"Let's go."

"We're wasting time."

Jason grabbed the suitcase.

As he walked toward the door...

Emily noticed something fall from one of the side pockets.

A framed photograph.

It hit the floor.

CRACK.

The glass shattered across the room.

Jason froze.

Emily instinctively bent down to pick it up.

Her trembling fingers brushed away the broken pieces.

It was their wedding photo.

Except...

Hidden behind it...

was another photograph.

One she had never seen before.

A picture of Jason...

Holding a tiny newborn baby.

Beside a woman Emily had never met.

The date on the back made her blood run cold.

It had been taken...

Eight months before Jason met her.

Emily looked up slowly.

"What..."

"...who is this child?"

Jason's face lost every trace of color.

Vanessa suddenly stopped smiling.

For the first time that night...

She realized she didn't know the man she was in love with.

May you like

And Jason whispered the words he had spent six years trying to bury.

"...Give me that photo."
