CHAPTER 3 – The Boy Who Chose Her

Emily stared at the lawyer.

“Why would he want to meet me?”

The old man’s eyes softened.

“Because Sophia left him a diary.”

Jason went still.

The lawyer continued, “Every page mentioned your name.”

Emily’s breath caught.

“My name?”

He opened the envelope and pulled out a faded letter.

Sophia had written it before the accident.

If Jason ever marries Emily Carter, trust her. She is the kind of woman who will protect a child even if the world asks her not to.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“This is insane. She didn’t even know Emily.”

The lawyer looked at Jason.

“She knew more than all of you.”

Jason grabbed the letter with shaking hands.

“What are you saying?”

The lawyer’s voice dropped.

“Sophia didn’t die in an accident.”

Emily’s heart stopped.

“She was running from someone.”

Jason whispered, “Who?”

The lawyer looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Why are you looking at me?”

Before anyone could answer, the elevator opened again.

A little boy stepped out.

Seven years old.

Dark hair.

Jason’s eyes.

And in his hand…

he held the other half of the broken wedding photo.

The boy looked past Jason completely.

Then he walked straight to Emily.

“Are you the woman my mom said would save me?”

Emily fell to her knees.

Jason reached for him.

“Son…”

The boy flinched.

“Don’t call me that.”

The room went silent.

Then the child pointed at Vanessa.

May you like

“She was there.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
