CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Behind the Trap

Emily arranged a meeting using the anonymous phone number inside the envelope.
At exactly 9:00 p.m., she entered a quiet rooftop restaurant.
An elegant woman in her sixties stood waiting.
Silver hair.
Navy suit.
Calm eyes that missed nothing.
"My name is Victoria Hale."
Emily had never heard it before.
But she would never forget it again.
Victoria slid a thick file across the table.
Inside were photographs from nearly a decade.
Lily...
with different hair colors.
Different passports.
Different names.
Standing beside businessmen in New York.
Miami.
Chicago.
Dallas.
Every case ended the same way.
Affair.
Divorce.
Financial collapse.
Corporate takeover.
Lily wasn't acting alone.
She worked for a shadowy investment group that targeted family-owned businesses. Seduce the husband. Destroy the marriage. Force the sale. Buy the company for pennies. Repeat.
Daniel had never been the mastermind.
He had been the perfect victim.
His ego made him easy to manipulate.
Emily asked the question that haunted her.
"Why are you helping me?"
Victoria smiled sadly.
"Because Lily destroyed my son's life seven years ago."
Silence.
"I promised myself she'd never do it again."
Together, they designed the perfect trap.
Emily pretended to know nothing.
She even encouraged Daniel to attend a luxury charity gala, telling him she was "too tired" to join.
Instead, she arrived an hour later—with Victoria, forensic accountants, company board members, and federal investigators already waiting nearby.
Daniel entered the ballroom holding Lily's hand.
He laughed.
He believed the company board would soon approve his new expansion plan.
Instead, the giant screen behind the stage suddenly lit up.
Hotel receipts.
Bank transfers.
Hidden recordings.
Fake identities.
Every secret appeared one after another.
The ballroom fell silent.
Daniel turned toward Lily.
"What is this?"
For the first time...
she looked afraid.
Then the older man from the photograph walked in.
Lily smiled with relief.
"My lawyer."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
She placed a final document on the stage.
"He's the undercover investigator who has spent three years building a case against your organization."
Lily's face turned white.
She had unknowingly walked into the operation that had been waiting for her.
Within minutes, investigators surrounded the ballroom.
Members of the fraud ring were arrested across multiple states at the same time.
Daniel collapsed into a chair.
"I loved you..."
Lily looked at him with complete indifference.
"No."
"I just needed your signature."
Weeks later...
Daniel lost his executive position, his reputation, and much of his fortune because of his own fraud and deception. Emily, who had preserved the evidence and protected the remaining assets, rebuilt her life with Sophie.
One afternoon, Sophie asked,
"Mom... are we finally okay?"
Emily smiled through tears.
"We're better than okay."
"We're finally free."
Daniel had believed he destroyed his family for love.
The truth was far crueler.
May you like
He had risked everything...
for someone who had never loved him at all.
