CHAPTER 7 — The Letter From the Dead

One year after the trial, Emily finally believed her life had become normal.

Sophie was smiling again.

The foundation had helped hundreds of families recover from financial fraud.

The media had stopped calling.

For the first time in years...

peace felt real.

Then a package arrived.

No return address.

No fingerprints.

Only one sentence typed across the front.

"Your father didn't die the way you were told."

Emily's hands began to shake.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

A brass key.

And a photograph.

The photo showed her father...

standing beside a woman Emily had never seen.

On the back, someone had written:

"She knows who betrayed him."

Victoria immediately called the FBI.

The tape was restored overnight.

Emily sat in silence as her father's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this... I failed to protect you."

Emily burst into tears.

"I trusted the wrong people."

"I discovered they weren't just stealing companies..."

"They were laundering money for powerful people."

"I refused to sign."

"So they made my death look like an accident."

Emily stopped breathing.

Her father hadn't died in a car crash.

He had been murdered.

The brass key led investigators to an abandoned safety deposit box.

Inside were contracts...

bank records...

and a black notebook listing dozens of names.

Politicians.

Judges.

Corporate executives.

Every person connected to the fraud empire.

At the bottom of the final page...

one name had been circled three times.

Daniel Carter.

Emily stared in disbelief.

"No..."

"He couldn't have known."

But the evidence suggested otherwise.

Years before meeting Lily...

Daniel's signature appeared on several suspicious financial documents.

Not as the mastermind.

But as someone who had unknowingly approved fraudulent transactions.

He had been used long before the affair began.

Someone had been preparing him for years.

Meanwhile...

Inside federal prison...

Lily received terrifying news.

Two inmates had disappeared after agreeing to testify.

That night, someone slipped a note under her cell door.

"You're next."

For the first time...

The woman who had manipulated everyone...

May you like

felt genuine fear.
