CHAPTER 8 — The Witness No One Expected

Emily reluctantly agreed to meet Daniel one final time.
Not because she trusted him.
Because she needed answers.
Daniel looked exhausted.
"I swear... I never knew."
Emily slid the old contracts across the table.
"Then explain your signature."
Daniel's face turned pale.
He remembered.
Years earlier, his ambitious former boss had handed him stacks of paperwork.
"Routine acquisitions."
"Standard investments."
He had signed everything without reading.
He had spent years helping criminals...
without realizing it.
Emily looked into his eyes.
For the first time...
She believed him.
His greatest crime hadn't been intelligence.
It had been arrogance.
He thought nothing bad could happen to him.
Until it did.
That evening...
The FBI rushed Emily into protective custody.
Someone had broken into Daniel's apartment.
Nothing was stolen.
Except one thing.
The black notebook.
The most important piece of evidence had vanished.
Security cameras showed a masked woman leaving the building.
Emily whispered,
"Lily?"
The investigators shook their heads.
"No."
"Lily is still in prison."
Then who?
Forty-eight hours later...
The answer shocked everyone.
The mysterious woman voluntarily walked into FBI headquarters.
She removed her sunglasses.
Victoria gasped.
"No..."
It was Lily's identical twin sister.
Claire Brooks.
No government record had ever mentioned a sibling.
Claire calmly placed the stolen notebook on the table.
"I'm done running."
She revealed the truth.
She and Lily had been separated as children.
Lily was recruited into the criminal organization.
Claire escaped.
For years she secretly gathered evidence...
waiting for the right moment.
"I stole the notebook..."
"So they couldn't destroy it before bringing it here."
The investigators realized...
The woman they had been chasing wasn't helping the criminals.
She had been sabotaging them from the inside.
May you like
For years.
