The man's identity matched official government records.
Thomas Reed.
Declared dead eighteen years earlier.
He calmly raised his right hand and took the witness oath.
The prosecutors looked stunned.
Defense attorneys smiled.
Everything Nora's team had built suddenly seemed ready to collapse.
Thomas spoke quietly.
"I lied years ago because my family was threatened."
He paused.
"But I am done running."
He produced a small digital recorder.
"My testimony was never destroyed."
The recording filled the courtroom.
A younger voice could be heard giving orders.
"Make Bennett disappear."
Another voice answered.
"It will look like an accident."
Nora closed her eyes.
She recognized the second voice.
Not from the investigation.
From childhood.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had attended birthday parties at her home.
Someone her father had once called family.
Adrian leaned toward her.
"You know who it is."
She nodded.
Tears formed in her eyes.
"My god..."
"It was Uncle Victor."
The courtroom exploded with shouting.
