CHAPTER 2 – The Woman Who Was Never Dead

Ethan slammed on the brakes.
The taxi stopped beneath an abandoned railway bridge.
His breathing became heavy.
"Who are you?" he demanded.
The hooded stranger looked out at the rain before answering.
"My name isn't important."
"But the woman in that photograph..."
"...is still alive."
Ethan laughed nervously.
"No."
"I buried her."
"You buried an empty coffin."
Those words shattered every memory Ethan thought he could trust.
Twenty years earlier, detectives had claimed Emily died in a warehouse explosion.
The body had been burned beyond recognition.
The funeral was closed-casket.
Everyone told Ethan to move on.
So he did.
Or at least he tried.
The stranger handed him a small silver key.
"You've been lied to for two decades."
"Open Locker 317 at Grand Central Station."
"Everything begins there."
Before Ethan could ask another question—
Headlights flooded the bridge.
Three black SUVs surrounded the taxi.
Men in expensive suits stepped out.
None of them carried visible weapons.
They didn't need to.
Their confidence was enough.
One older man approached the driver's window.
"Ethan Carter."
"You've searched for answers for twenty years."
"Tonight... you finally stop asking questions."
The stranger suddenly whispered,
"They're not after me."
"They're after you."
Before Ethan could react—
The hooded passenger opened the taxi door and calmly walked into the rain.
The armed men ignored him completely.
Every single one of them stared only at Ethan.
Confused, Ethan looked down at the old photograph one last time.
Something was different.
A hidden message had appeared beneath Emily's smile.
It wasn't there before.
The faded ink now read:
"Trust no one... not even your own daughter."
Ethan froze.
His daughter was the only person he had left.
Or so he believed.
As the first suited man smiled and reached for the taxi door...
Ethan realized the truth was far more terrifying than murder.

His entire family...
had been built on a lie.
