CHAPTER 8 – The Truth They Buried

Victor was handcuffed.

His empire had fallen.

But the nightmare wasn't over.

Sarah desperately worked to stop the countdown.

"I can't break the encryption!"

Emily suddenly remembered something.

"The locker!"

"The flash drive!"

Ethan pulled the flash drive from his pocket.

Sarah connected it to the FBI laptop.

A single video automatically opened.

The screen showed a much younger Victor Voss.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I failed."

Everyone stared in confusion.

Victor on the floor slowly closed his eyes.

Young Victor continued speaking.

"My greatest enemy was never the FBI."

"It was the people inside my own family."

"I created a fake criminal empire..."

"...to lure every corrupt official into exposing themselves."

The room fell completely silent.

Sarah whispered,

"No..."

The video continued.

"The money was real."

"The crimes were real."

"But every deal was recorded."

"Every payment."

"Every murder order."

"Every politician who accepted a bribe."

"I built the world's largest trap."

"And only one man was honest enough to finish it."

The screen displayed Ethan's photograph.

"You."

Ethan stepped backward in disbelief.

Victor finally spoke.

His voice was weak.

"I erased your memory..."

"...because they would have killed you if they knew who you were."

Emily covered her mouth.

Lily burst into tears.

Victor looked at Ethan one last time.

"I wasn't protecting myself..."

"I was protecting you."

Then...

His heart monitor went flat.

Victor Voss died before revealing one final secret.

Days later, the hidden files triggered the largest corruption investigation in American history.

Hundreds of powerful figures were arrested.

Emily and Lily finally started rebuilding the family that had been stolen from them.

Ethan returned to driving his old yellow taxi—not because he had to, but because it reminded him that ordinary people were worth protecting.

One rainy evening, a little boy climbed into the back seat.

He quietly handed Ethan an old black-and-white photograph.

It showed Ethan...

Standing beside a woman...

Holding a baby...

Ten years before Ethan and Emily had supposedly met.

On the back, written in faded ink, were six chilling words:

"This wasn't your first family either."

Ethan's hands froze on the steering wheel.

Everything he had fought to uncover...

Had only revealed the first layer of an even darker truth.
