Chapter 5 - THE COLD CELL

Headline: "Thrown Into a Dirty Cell Without a Trial—But the Police Chief Made One Fatal Mistake!"The iron door slammed shut with a deafening metallic clang.
The air inside the holding cell was thick with the smell of damp concrete and rust. Emiliano stood behind the rusted bars, his tailored linen suit now stained with dirt.
Across the hallway, sitting on a wooden chair with his boots up on a desk, was the local Police Chief, Roberto Mendez. He was casually flipping through the black ledger Emiliano had taken from the safe.
"You thought you were clever, didn't you, city boy?" Chief Mendez sneered, spitting a toothpick onto the floor. "Coming back here with your fancy suits and your pretty girl, trying to stir up trouble. Your uncle Rogelio warned me you’d try something like this."
"You’re a public servant, Mendez," Emiliano said, his voice deadly calm despite the handcuffs cutting into his wrists. "That ledger in your hand contains enough evidence to put you in a federal penitentiary for the rest of your life. Do you really want to ruin your career for a snake like Rogelio?"
Mendez laughed, a deep, mocking sound. "Federal penitentiary? Son, who do you think is going to take this ledger to the feds? You? You’re charged with armed burglary, trespassing, and attempted grand theft. In this town, my word is the law. This ledger is going into the incinerator tonight, and you... well, let’s just say accidents happen to prisoners who try to escape."
The door to the precinct opened, and Rogelio walked in, a triumphant grin on his face. He walked straight to Emiliano’s cell, looking at his nephew like a hunter looking at a trapped animal.
"I have to admit, Emiliano, you almost had me," Rogelio whispered, leaning against the bars. "The five-million-dollar offer was very tempting. But I know how the Montes family operates. They don't do business with people like me. It was too easy. So I called Chief Mendez and waited down the road."
Rogelio pulled out his phone and showed Emiliano a live video feed.
Emiliano’s blood ran cold.
The feed showed the tin shack in the ravine. Two of Rogelio’s armed thugs were standing outside, forcing Don Jacinto and Doña Carmen into the back of an unmarked pickup truck. Valeria was standing nearby, her hands tied behind her back, guarded by another man.
"No..." Emiliano growled, lunging against the bars. The iron rattled violently. "If you touch them, Rogelio, I swear to God I will tear you apart!"
"You’re not in a position to threaten anyone," Rogelio hissed. "Here is how this is going to play out. You are going to sign a document confessing to all the charges. You will also sign over a transfer of five million dollars from your company account in Monterrey to my offshore account. Once the money clears, I will let your parents and your pretty little fiancée go. If you refuse... well, the ravine is a very deep, very dangerous place. People get lost there all the time."
Rogelio waved a set of papers through the bars, along with a pen.
"Sign it, nephew. Save your family. Or watch them pay for your arrogance."
Emiliano looked at the papers, then at the live video of his crying mother and his trembling father. He had no choice. He reached his hand through the bars and took the pen.

But just as his nib touched the paper, the lights in the entire police station suddenly went out.
The Chapter 5 Hook: A heavy, metallic silence blanketed the dark station. Then, the sound of breaking glass shattered the quiet, followed by the deafening roar of a military-grade helicopter hovering directly above the roof.
