Chapter 1 - THE ZERO-HOUR CLAUSE

The screech of Chloe’s panicked gasps echoed through the dripping master suite, but I didn't stay to watch her wipe the black sludge from her mascara-stained eyes. My movements were surgical, devoid of the frantic desperation Robert expected. As I walked down the grand marble staircase, my hand rested gently on my stomach. He thought he had stripped me of my power simply because I stopped wearing power suits to the office.

Robert had made one fatal, arrogant mistake: he forgot who wrote the foundational charter of Vanguard Capital Partners.

In the back of my sleek black Town Car, I pulled out my secure phone and dialed a private, unlisted line. It rang twice before a sharp, gravelly voice answered.

"Victoria," Arthur Vance, Senior Partner at Vance & Sterling Corporate Law and Wall Street's most feared legal strategist, spoke crisp and clear. "I saw the market close. Vanguard looks stable on paper. Why are you calling on a private line?"

"Arthur," I said, my voice as cold as liquid nitrogen. "Trigger the Contingency-Alpha protocol immediately. Execute the Morality Dissolution Clause under Section 14-B of the master partnership agreement."

There was a pregnant silence on the line. I heard the rustle of papers, followed by Arthur’s low, appreciative chuckle. "Section 14-B? Victoria, if we trigger that, Robert loses every stock option, every signatory right, and his entire 40% equity stake instantly reverts to the founding trust. He’ll be stripped of his COO status before the opening bell tomorrow."

"Not just stripped, Arthur," I replied, staring out at the Manhattan skyline. "I want his corporate credit cards cancelled by midnight. I want his access badge revoked at 6:00 AM. And prepare a press release detailing an emergency restructuring due to gross ethical misconduct and fiduciary breach."

"Consider it done," Arthur said. "And what about Chloe Vance?"

I smiled bitterly. "Ah, yes. Your disgraced niece. Make sure her father—your brother—knows exactly whose sheets she was sleeping in today when her termination notice lands on her desk."
