Chapter 2 - THE BOARDROOM MASSACRE

At 8:30 AM the next morning, Robert walked into Vanguard's glass-walled corporate tower on Wall Street wearing his finest Savile Row suit. He was smiling, high-fiving junior executives, convinced he had broken my spirit the day before. Chloe walked three steps behind him, trying to hide her freshly scrubbed face beneath heavy foundation.

They stepped into the executive elevator and pushed the button for the top floor. But when the doors opened to the main boardroom, the air in the room felt thick enough to suffocate them.

Sitting at the head of the polished mahogany conference table wasn't the board of directors Robert expected to control. It was me.

I was wearing a sharp, custom navy blazer over my maternity dress, flanked by Arthur Vance and six federal forensic auditors.

"What is the meaning of this circus?" Robert sneered, trying to assert dominance as he slammed his briefcase onto the table. "Victoria, you belong at home resting! Security, remove these people!"

"Security works for the Board, Robert," Arthur said smoothly, sliding a 200-page dossier across the table. "And as of 12:01 AM today, you no longer hold a seat on this board. In fact, you don't even own an employee badge."

Robert laughed, a nervous, crackling sound. "Don't be ridiculous! I am the COO! I hold 40% of Vanguard’s equity!"

"You held 40% contingent on your compliance with the Founders' Integrity Covenant," I said, leaning forward. "A covenant that strictly dictates any act of gross moral turpitude, embezzlement, or marital infidelity resulting in brand damage forfeits all equity back to the principal founder. Me."

Robert’s face drained of all color. "That’s a bluff! You gave me those shares!"

"Read page 14, paragraph 3, Robert," I said softly. "You signed it four years ago on our wedding night. You were so busy looking at the numbers that you never read the small print."
