CHAPTER 5 – The Gunshot That Changed Everything

The handgun appeared so fast that no one had time to react.
The waitress screamed.
Several bikers instinctively reached for their belts.
Caleb stood frozen.
Rex pointed the pistol directly at the old man's chest.
"No one touches that tape," he growled. "Not today. Not ever."
The old man didn't move.
He simply looked at Rex with quiet disappointment.
"I watched your father become a legend," he said softly.
"And I just watched his son become a coward."
Rex's finger tightened on the trigger.
"Shut up!"
BANG!
The deafening gunshot echoed through the diner.
Everyone ducked.
Coffee cups shattered.
Glass exploded across the floor.
When the smoke cleared...
The old man was still standing.
Unhurt.
Rex stared in disbelief.
A towering biker named Mason had thrown himself in front of the chairman at the last second.
Blood soaked through Mason's leather vest as he fell to one knee.
"You..." Rex whispered.
Mason looked up with tears in his eyes.
"My father died protecting this club."
"You turned it into something he'd be ashamed of."
Before Rex could fire again, the front doors burst open.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapon!"
More than twenty armed officers flooded into the diner from every entrance.
Red and blue lights flashed through the windows.
The entire parking lot was surrounded.
Rex spun toward the back exit—
Only to find it blocked by another team.
There was nowhere left to run.
The elderly woman quietly placed the cassette into the old tape player.
The room fell silent.
A crackling voice filled the diner.
"I know Rex is planning to kill me tonight..."
It was Caleb's father.
His voice.
His final recording.
"If you're hearing this... I didn't survive."
Gasps filled the room.
Then another voice was heard on the tape.
Rex.
Cold.
Calm.
Unmistakable.
"Cut the brakes."
"By tomorrow morning... this club belongs to me."
The tape ended.
Silence.
Every biker slowly stepped away from Rex.
One by one...
They removed the Iron Reapers patch from their leather vests and dropped it onto the floor.
Rex looked around in horror.
"My own brothers..."
"No," Mason replied.
"You lost your brothers thirty years ago."
"The rest of us just finally found out."
As federal agents placed handcuffs on Rex, the old man walked outside into the pouring rain.
He looked toward the old clubhouse across the road.
Then he handed Caleb a small brass key.
"It doesn't open a door."
"It opens your father's safe."
Caleb frowned.
"My father had a safe?"
The old man nodded.
"He left behind one final secret."
"A secret worth more than everything Rex ever stole."

Inside that forgotten safe...
Was the document that proved the Iron Reapers had never belonged to Rex's family at all.
