🔥 CHAPTER 7 — The Offer That Could Change the World

Glass crunched beneath Elena's shoes as FBI agents stormed through her shattered penthouse.
"Clear!"
"North hallway clear!"
"Balcony secure!"
Within seconds, dozens of armed officers flooded the apartment.
But the old man was gone.
No fingerprints.
No DNA.
No footprints.
Only one black chess king remained on the floor where Richard Ashcroft had been standing.
The lead investigator picked it up carefully.
His face turned pale.
"Oh, no..."
Elena looked at him.
"What is it?"
He swallowed.
"This isn't a calling card."
"It's an invitation."
Two days later...
The White House requested an emergency meeting.
No press.
No cameras.
No public schedule.
Elena was escorted through underground tunnels beneath Washington, D.C.
She entered a heavily guarded conference room.
Around the table sat people whose faces rarely appeared together.
The Attorney General.
The Director of National Intelligence.
The Treasury Secretary.
The FBI Director.
A four-star general.
And three senators.
No one smiled.
The Attorney General broke the silence.
"Miss Laurent..."
"You've accidentally become the most important civilian in America."
Elena frowned.
"I didn't ask for this."
"We know."
The FBI Director placed a classified folder in front of her.
"Project Atlas."
She slowly opened it.
Every page contained names.
Corporate executives.
Foreign agents.
Judges.
Media owners.
Bankers.
Billionaires.
Some were dead.
Many were still in power.
A red stamp covered the final page.
NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT
The Treasury Secretary spoke quietly.
"If this list becomes public tomorrow..."
"...the global financial system could collapse."
Silence filled the room.
"Then destroy it."
The Director shook his head.
"We can't."
"Why not?"
"Because whoever controls Atlas..."
"...controls the world's hidden economy."
Meanwhile...
Damian sat alone in federal custody.
He hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.
The prison lights never dimmed.
Every time he closed his eyes...
He saw Elena's face.
Not angry.
Not hateful.
Simply disappointed.
That hurt more than prison bars ever could.
A guard approached his cell.
"You have a visitor."
Damian frowned.
"I don't have anyone left."
"You do today."
The visitor entered wearing an ordinary gray coat.
Middle-aged.
Friendly.
Forgettable.
The kind of man nobody would ever remember.
He sat down calmly.
"My condolences."
"For what?"
"The life you thought you had."
Damian narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you?"
The stranger smiled.
"Another Chairman."
Damian froze.
"You..."
"There isn't just one."
The man leaned closer.
"Richard Ashcroft has retired."
"I'm his successor."
Damian couldn't breathe.
"You murdered him?"
"No."
"He chose me."
The stranger placed a small envelope on the table.
Inside was a single photograph.
Damian picked it up.
His hands immediately began shaking.
It showed Elena as a little girl.
Standing beside...
Richard Ashcroft.
Both smiling.
The photograph had been taken twenty-four years earlier.
Damian stared in disbelief.
"No..."
The stranger nodded.
"Your wife has been closer to us than she realizes."
That evening...
Elena couldn't stop staring at the same photograph.
She had found an identical copy hidden inside her father's journal.
She remembered the day.
She had been six years old.
A kind old man had bought her ice cream after she got lost in Central Park.
She remembered laughing.
She remembered him carrying her on his shoulders.
She remembered him telling her...
"One day..."
"...you'll inherit something extraordinary."
At the time...
She thought he meant a toy.
Now she realized...
He had been telling the truth.
Her father had known him all along.
But why?
The answer arrived sooner than expected.
A hidden page slipped from the journal.
On it, Michael Laurent had written:
Richard Ashcroft saved your life twice.
Never assume every Chairman is your enemy.
Elena's heart pounded.
Had her father been working with Richard...
instead of against him?
Before she could think further—
Her secure phone rang.
Only one person had the number.
The FBI Director.
His voice was urgent.
"Miss Laurent..."
"We've just received satellite confirmation."
"Confirmation of what?"
He hesitated.
"Richard Ashcroft is dead."
Elena closed her eyes.
"I saw him escape."
"So did our agents."
"Then how—"
"A body was found."
"DNA confirmed."
Elena whispered,
"That's impossible."
The Director answered with one chilling sentence.
"Unless..."
May you like
"...the man in your apartment wasn't Richard Ashcroft."
