🔥 CHAPTER 9 — The Bullet Meant for the Heiress

The red laser dot trembled against Elena's chest.
For one endless second...
Nobody breathed.
Not the FBI agents.
Not Evelyn Mercer.
Not Elena.
Then—
CRACK!
The window exploded.
A sniper's bullet tore through the apartment.
Elena instinctively ducked.
The round missed her heart by inches...
But struck the marble wall behind her, sending stone fragments flying across the room.
"DOWN!"
Federal agents tackled Elena to the floor as automatic gunfire erupted from the rooftops surrounding the building.
The luxurious penthouse became a battlefield.
Smoke alarms screamed.
Glass rained from the ceiling.
Furniture splintered beneath a hail of bullets.
Outside...
Black SUVs blocked every street.
Masked gunmen in tactical gear emerged from them with military precision.
These weren't ordinary assassins.
They moved like special forces.
They communicated without speaking.
They knew exactly where every security camera was located.
The FBI Director looked out the shattered window.
His expression turned grim.
"No..."
One of the agents asked,
"What is it?"
He whispered,
"They're Ghost Division."
The room fell silent.
Every federal agent knew the name.
Ghost Division officially didn't exist.
Unofficially...
They were the organization's execution squad.
If Ghost Division appeared...
Someone important was supposed to die.
Evelyn Mercer remained astonishingly calm.
She slowly closed the wooden box still sitting on the dining table.
"They've made their decision."
Elena looked at her.
"You knew this would happen."
Evelyn nodded.
"I expected them."
"You used me as bait."
A painful silence followed.
Finally...
"Yes."
The answer felt like another bullet.
Elena stared at the woman claiming to be her biological mother.
"You knew they would try to kill me."
"I needed to know which faction moved first."
"You gambled with my life!"
"I gambled with my own daughter."
Those words carried no pride.
Only regret.
Outside...
A deafening explosion shook the entire building.
One of the lower floors erupted into flames.
Emergency sprinklers activated instantly.
The lights flickered.
The FBI Director shouted,
"We're evacuating!"
Deep beneath the tower...
A secret escape tunnel led toward an underground parking garage.
Federal agents surrounded Elena as they hurried through the narrow concrete corridor.
Damian Voss waited there.
Handcuffed.
Guarded.
He had been transferred moments earlier for his own protection.
The instant he saw Elena...
He ran toward her despite the chains on his wrists.
"Are you hurt?"
She looked at him in disbelief.
After everything...
His first question wasn't about himself.
Before she could answer—
The tunnel lights suddenly went dark.
Complete silence.
Then...
One slow clap echoed through the darkness.
A familiar voice followed.
"You've all become remarkably predictable."
The emergency lights flashed on.
Standing fifty feet away...
Surrounded by six armed guards...
Was Richard Ashcroft.
Alive.
The FBI Director stepped backward.
"No..."
"You died."
Richard smiled warmly.
"So did the man buried yesterday."
Nobody spoke.
Richard adjusted his cufflinks.
"I've attended my own funeral three times."
He looked at Elena.
"It's useful."
The agents raised their rifles.
Richard never flinched.
Instead...
He reached into his pocket and produced an old family photograph.
He gently tossed it across the floor.
It slid to Elena's feet.
She picked it up.
Her hands immediately began trembling.
The picture showed Michael Laurent...
Evelyn Mercer...
A little girl...
And Richard Ashcroft.
All smiling together on a beach.
Written across the back in faded ink were four devastating words.
Our Family — Summer 1998
Elena looked from the photograph...
To Richard...
To Evelyn.
"What is this?"
Richard's smile slowly disappeared.
"The truth."
He took one step forward.
"I wasn't your enemy."
He looked directly into Elena's eyes.
"I was your godfather."
Silence swallowed the tunnel.
Before anyone could respond—
One of Richard's own bodyguards suddenly pulled out a concealed pistol...
And shot him in the back.
BANG!
Richard collapsed.
Chaos erupted.
The bodyguard shouted into a hidden microphone.
"Primary target eliminated!"
May you like
Then he turned his weapon toward Elena.
