Chapter 2 - The Cowardice of the Wealthy

The grand banquet hall had officially transformed from a playground for the elite into a high-security detention zone. Armed men in tactical gear, wearing the black-and-gold insignia of the Apex Command, poured through the side entrances, replacing the country club’s private security.
Victoria Sterling-Vaughn was frantic. She grabbed her son Julian by the arm, dragging him toward Maya.
"Julian! Do something!" Victoria hissed, her voice cracking with desperation. "Talk to your wife! Tell her to call off this lunatic Colonel! Tell her it was all a family misunderstanding!"
Julian, who had spent the last two years watching his mother humiliate Maya without ever uttering a single word of defense, finally stepped forward. He forced a pathetic, trembling smile onto his face and reached out to touch Maya’s shoulder. "Maya... babe... look at me. It’s Julian. I’m sorry I didn't say anything earlier, I was just... I was shocked by my mother’s behavior. You know I love you, right? We’re a family. Think about our daughter, Lily."
Maya looked at the hand on her shoulder. Two years of marriage flashed before her eyes. She remembered the nights she sat alone in the nursery, crying while Julian attended galas without her because his mother said she "wasn't presentable." She remembered how he stayed silent when Victoria forced her to sign a prenuptial agreement that practically classified her as a live-in maid.
Slowly, Maya stepped back, causing Julian’s hand to fall uselessly into the air.
"Don't touch me, Julian," Maya said, her voice completely devoid of the warmth it usually held.
"Maya, please!" Julian begged, dropping to his knees, mimicking the Colonel but out of pure, unadulterated cowardice. "We can leave here. We can go home. My mother is old, she doesn't know what she’s saying. I love you!"
"You love the Sterling-Vaughn name," Maya corrected him, her voice growing stronger by the second. "And you loved the fact that I had no family to protect me when you and your mother wanted to treat me like a dog. You stood there. You watched her slap me. You watched her insult our daughter."
Colonel Vance stepped between Julian and Maya, his massive frame completely blocking the pathetic young billionaire. "Get away from her, boy. Your family’s assets are currently being frozen under federal emergency codes. The Sterling-Vaughn corporation exists entirely on grants signed by the late General Alexander. Since your family has violated the safety of the true heir, those grants are officially revoked."
"What?!" Victoria shrieked, running forward, forgetting all her aristocratic poise. "You can’t do that! That's our company! We built it!"
"You built it on a stolen name and dead man's money," Vance snapped. He turned to his lieutenant. "Bring the biometric scanner. Let’s finish this properly."
A soldier stepped forward carrying a sleek, silver briefcase. When opened, it revealed a glowing blue optical scanner.
"Miss Aurora," Vance said gently, his tone shifting entirely when addressing Maya. "Please, place your thumb on the glass, and let the scanner read your iris. Let the world know exactly who you are."
Maya hesitated for a fraction of a second. She looked down at her daughter, Lily, who had stopped crying and was staring up at her with big, innocent eyes. I am doing this for you, Maya thought. No one will ever make you feel small.
She pressed her thumb to the glass. A sharp beep echoed through the room. A crimson beam swept across her right eye.
For three agonizing seconds, the machine whirred. Then, a synthetic, automated voice echoed from the speakers, a voice that generated chills down everyone’s spines:
"BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED. WELCOME HOME, AURORA STERLING. APEX COMMAND PRESTIGE LEVEL 5 ACTIVATED. ALL RIGHTS, WEALTH, AND MILITARY MANDATES RESTORED TO THE PRIMARY HEIR."
The crowd of politicians and investors immediately began backing away from Victoria and Julian, as if the mother and son were suddenly carrying a contagious plague. The very people who had been laughing at Victoria’s cruel jokes moments ago were now looking at Maya with absolute awe and terror.
May you like
Victoria collapsed into a nearby chair, her eyes hollow, staring at the realization of her total ruin.
But Maya wasn't done. She looked at Colonel Vance. "Colonel. My mother-in-law said I belonged in the gutter. I think it’s time she sees what the gutter actually feels like."
