Chapter 4 - The Predator and the Prey

The air inside the high-security military garrison was freezing. Victoria Sterling-Vaughn sat in the interrogation room, her expensive dress now crumpled and stained. Across from her sat Maya.

There were no guards in the room. Just Maya, holding a glass of water, and Victoria.

"You look pathetic," Maya said quietly, setting the glass down.

Victoria sneered, trying to maintain her venomous facade. "You think because you have a fancy title and some soldiers that you've won? You're still just a street rat, Maya. You don't have the stomach for this world. My husband's family built an empire while your father died in the dirt."

"My father died protecting his country. Your husband built his empire by scavenging off a dead man’s name," Maya countered, leaning forward. The soft, submissive daughter-in-law was completely gone. In her place sat a woman who possessed the authority of a general. "Let's cut the games, Victoria. You sent a message to the Iron Phantoms. You told them to eliminate me."

Victoria froze, her lips tightening into a thin line.

"They aren't coming for me, Victoria. They're coming for the vault," Maya continued, bluffing with a confidence she didn't know she possessed. "But here’s what you don't know: Colonel Vance has already surrounded the Sterling Estate. The moment your mercenary friends show up, they will be slaughtered. And then, I will personally ensure you and Julian spend the rest of your miserable lives in a federal supermax prison for conspiracy to commit murder."

Victoria’s composure finally broke. She began to laugh, a manic, desperate sound. "You think the Iron Phantoms are just a bunch of street thugs? Foolish girl! They don't just want the vault. They own this city! Who do you think paid for my son's business merger? Who do you think funded the very politicians sitting in that banquet hall tonight?"

Maya kept her face expressionless, absorbing the information. It’s a network, she realized. A massive, corrupt network using the Sterling-Vaughn name as a front.

"If you tell me who commands them," Maya said coldly, "I might let Julian live out his sentence in a low-security facility. If you don't... I’ll make sure he takes the fall for the entire operation."

Victoria’s eyes widened. Her son was her only weakness. "No... you wouldn't."

"Try me," Maya whispered. "Look at my face, Victoria. Remember the slap you gave me? You taught me exactly how cruel this world can be. Now, I’m going to show you what happens when the person you crushed decides to stand up."

Before Victoria could answer, the red emergency lights in the garrison began to flash. A loud, rhythmic siren wailed through the corridors.

The heavy steel door of the interrogation room burst open. Colonel Vance stood there, his rifle drawn.

"Maya, we have a breach," Vance said, his face grim. "They aren't going to the estate. They came here. The Iron Phantoms are inside the facility."

Victoria smiled painfully. "I told you, orphan. You should have stayed in the gutter."

Maya didn't panic. She stood up, walked over to Victoria, and leaned down close to her ear. "Watch me burn your world down," she whispered.
