Chapter 5 - The Battle for the Legacy

The garrison was a war zone. The lights flickered violently as smoke grenades filled the corridors with a thick, choking fog. Gunfire echoed through the concrete halls—the sharp, distinct cracks of military rifles answering the silenced, rapid fire of the mercenary invaders.

Colonel Vance pulled Maya into the tactical command center, locking the reinforced blast doors behind them. Inside, a dozen monitors displayed various angles of the facility. Black-clad mercenaries with high-tech night-vision gear were moving with lethal efficiency, cutting through the standard garrison guards.

"They're looking for you, and they're looking for the pendant," Vance said, checking his ammunition. "They know the pendant is the biometric key to the global defense mainframe. If they get it, they control the nation's entire automated defense grid."

"Where is Julian?" Maya asked, looking at the monitors.

Vance pointed to a screen showing the lower holding cells. Julian was cowering under a bench, weeping hysterically as the sounds of gunfire drew closer to his cell.

Suddenly, the monitor showing the main corridor went static. A voice broke through the garrison’s intercom system—a smooth, distorted voice that sounded entirely calm despite the chaos.

"Aurora Sterling," the voice echoed. "Or do you prefer Maya? My name is Commander Zero. Twenty-four years ago, I personally oversaw the termination of your father. He was a stubborn man who believed wealth should belong to the state rather than the individuals who possess the power to wield it. Your mother-in-law was a very cooperative tool in cleaning up the loose ends."

Maya gripped the edge of the console, her knuckles turning white.

"Give us the pendant, and walk out of the facility," Zero continued. "Do this, and your pathetic husband lives. Do this, and your child stays safe. Refuse, and we will level this building with you inside it."

Vance looked at Maya, shaking his head. "Don't listen to him. We have reinforcements arriving in ten minutes. We just need to hold."

"Ten minutes is too long," Maya said, her eyes locked on the monitor showing Julian’s cell. A group of three mercenaries had just reached his door, blowing the lock off. They dragged Julian out by his hair, holding a knife to his throat.

"Maya! Please! Save me!" Julian screamed into a security camera, knowing she was watching. "Tell them whatever they want!"

Maya looked down at the tarnished piece of metal around her neck. She remembered her childhood in the group home, the cold winter nights, the hunger, the constant feeling of worthlessness. She remembered Victoria’s slap, and Julian’s silence.

Then she looked at the painting of her father that Vance had transferred to the digital screen. What would a Sterling do?

She reached behind her neck, unclasped the chain, and held the pendant in her hand.

"Colonel," Maya said, her voice dropping into a calm, terrifying stillness. "Can this scanner transmit a signal directly to the global defense mainframe?"

Vance blinked. "Yes, but it requires absolute clearance..."

"I am the clearance," Maya said. She slammed the pendant onto the console’s primary uplink port. "Zero thinks he’s the predator. Let's show him what happens when the ghost of Alexander Sterling wakes up."
