CHAPTER 2 — The Letter That Broke a Billionaire

Michael almost hung up.
"I think you've called the wrong person."
But the lawyer calmly continued.
"Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m."
"Our client requested your presence."
"If you fail to appear..."
"...you'll regret it for the rest of your life."
The line went dead.
Michael laughed.
"What ridiculous nonsense."
Yet...
For reasons he couldn't explain...
He showed up.
The law office wasn't luxurious.
Just a quiet building downtown.
The receptionist led him into a conference room.
Only one woman sat inside.
Professional.
Elegant.
Cold.
She wore a charcoal-gray suit.
Her dark hair was neatly tied back.
Sharp blue eyes met his without emotion.
She looked strangely familiar.
Michael couldn't place why.
The lawyer entered carrying an old sealed envelope.
He placed it gently on the table.
"Miss Lily Carter."
"You may begin."
Michael froze.
Carter.
The woman slowly lifted her eyes.
"I've waited twenty years to meet you."
His heartbeat stumbled.
"...Lily?"
She nodded once.
No tears.
No anger.
No warmth.
Just silence.
Michael forced an awkward smile.
"I... I didn't recognize you."
She didn't answer.
Instead, she slid the old envelope toward herself.
"The person who wrote this letter wanted me to open it only after twenty years."
Michael noticed something.
The handwriting.
Emily's.
His ex-wife.
His fingers suddenly trembled.
"What... what is this?"
Lily carefully broke the faded wax seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter...
...and a small hospital envelope.
She unfolded the first page.
Her mother's voice seemed to come alive.
"My dearest Lily...
If you're reading this, it means twenty years have passed... and I am probably gone.
Please don't hate your father.
Because he never knew the truth."
Michael's breathing stopped.
"What truth?"
Lily continued reading.
The night Michael left...
The hospital called me.
The test results had arrived.
He wasn't your biological father."
The room fell completely silent.
Michael's face turned white.
His lips moved...
But no sound came out.
Then Lily opened the second envelope.
Inside was an original DNA report.
She slowly placed it in front of him.
Michael stared at the paper.
His vision blurred.
He whispered...
"No..."
Then another document slipped from the envelope.
A letter addressed...
To Michael.
Never opened.
Never delivered.
Emily had written it the night he abandoned them.
She had begged someone to give it to him.
But it had been lost for twenty years.
Michael unfolded it with shaking hands.
The first sentence shattered him.
"Michael... Lily is not your biological daughter.
But you are still the only man she has ever called Dad.
If you walk away today... you'll lose the greatest gift life ever gave you."
The paper slipped from his fingers.
His knees hit the floor.
For twenty years...
He had convinced himself that leaving had been easy because the family no longer mattered.
Now he realized something infinitely more painful.
Biology had never been the real test.
Love had been.
And he had failed it.
Just when Michael broke into uncontrollable sobs...
Lily quietly reached into her briefcase.
"There is one more letter."
Michael looked up through tears.
She placed a sealed envelope in front of him.
"The sender signed only four words."
He stared at the handwriting.
Then read the message on the front.
"From Lily's real father."
Michael slowly lifted the envelope...
Completely unaware...
May you like
That the truth inside would destroy far more than his pride. It would expose a betrayal that had been hidden for more than two decades.
