🔥 CHAPTER 3 — The Man Who Had Been Hiding for Twenty Years

Michael's hands shook as he stared at the sealed envelope.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Lily leaned back in her chair.
"I've never opened it."
Michael looked up.
"You... waited for me?"
She nodded.
"My mother wrote one instruction."
'Only open this letter if Michael is present.'
For the first time in twenty years...
Michael felt something he had never experienced.
Fear.
Real fear.
His fingers slowly broke the seal.
Inside was a single folded page.
No signature.
No address.
Just one sentence written across the top.
"If you're reading this... it means Emily kept her promise."
Michael frowned.
Promise?
He continued.
Michael...
You don't know me.
But twenty-four years ago, I stole everything from you.
His heartbeat stopped.
Emily never betrayed you.
She loved you until her final breath.
The child she carried wasn't the result of an affair.
Michael blinked.
"What..."
He kept reading.
Twenty years ago I was involved in a terrible accident.
My wife was pregnant.
Your wife, Emily, was the emergency nurse who tried to save us.
Michael looked confused.
Lily silently watched his face grow paler.
The letter continued.
My wife died.
Our baby survived.
Emily found out she had just lost her own unborn child during the same hospital emergency.
Michael froze.
Lost...
Her baby?
Emily had never told him.
Not once.
While Emily was unconscious, someone switched hospital identification bracelets.
When she woke up, everyone—including the doctors—believed the baby beside her was hers.
Michael could barely breathe.
His vision blurred.
"No..."
Emily discovered the truth weeks later.
She searched for me everywhere.
But I had disappeared overseas after the accident.
She decided one thing...
She would love that little girl exactly as if she had given birth to her.
Michael buried his face in his hands.
He remembered Emily kissing Lily every night.
Remembered Lily's first birthday.
Remembered teaching her to ride a bicycle...
Before abandoning her.
Every memory became another knife.
The letter wasn't finished.
Then one day I found Emily.
She begged me never to take Lily away.
She said...
'A child deserves love more than biology.'
Tears rolled down Michael's face.
He whispered,
"Emily..."
Lily quietly asked,
"Do you understand now?"
Michael nodded through sobs.
"I abandoned both of you..."
"I abandoned the two people who loved me the most."
Lily looked away.
"You're wrong."
Michael looked confused.
"There were three."
The lawyer slowly placed another folder onto the table.
"This one arrived yesterday."
"It was delivered by hand."
Michael opened it.
Inside...
was a recent photograph.
An elderly man stood outside a small church.
On the back someone had written:
"The man who wrote the letter is waiting."
Michael immediately stood.
"Take me to him."
But the lawyer slowly shook his head.
"You won't have much time."
"He has terminal cancer."
"And according to his doctor..."
May you like
"He may not survive the week."
