💥 CHAPTER 8 — The Witness Everyone Thought Was Dead

Lily opened the envelope with trembling hands.

Inside was a handwritten note and an old key.

The note read:

If you found this, Emily's final plan has begun.

Don't trust anyone connected to Harper Global.

Not even the investigators.

At the bottom was an address.

An abandoned railway station outside the city.

And one signature.

— Samuel Brooks

Michael frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

Mrs. Evelyn suddenly went pale.

"Oh, God..."

"What?"

"He was supposed to be dead."

Twenty-three years earlier...

Samuel Brooks had been Richard Harper's chief financial officer.

Unlike the others, he refused to falsify company accounts.

Three days before he was scheduled to testify in federal court...

His car exploded.

Authorities declared him dead.

The case collapsed.

Richard Harper walked free.

Mrs. Evelyn whispered,

"Emily never believed Samuel died."

That night...

Michael and Lily drove to the abandoned station.

The place looked deserted.

Rust covered the old tracks.

Broken windows rattled in the wind.

For several minutes...

Nothing happened.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

"You finally came."

An elderly man stepped from the shadows.

A deep scar crossed the left side of his face.

One eye was clouded white.

But his voice was calm.

"My name is Samuel Brooks."

Lily stared at him.

"You've been alive all this time?"

Samuel nodded.

"Barely."

He explained that the explosion had been staged.

A loyal friend switched dental records, allowing the world to believe he was dead.

For two decades, he lived under false identities, gathering proof against Harper Global's hidden network.

"But I wasn't alone."

He looked directly at Lily.

"Emily kept me alive."

Every few months, without anyone knowing, Emily secretly delivered money, medicine, and information.

She never asked for recognition.

She only said one thing:

'Promise me my daughter will inherit the truth—not my pain.'

Lily burst into tears.

For years she had believed her mother was simply a struggling waitress.

Now she discovered Emily had quietly protected strangers, exposed corruption, and sacrificed every chance at an easier life.

Samuel unlocked an old metal locker with the key from the envelope.

Inside were dozens of hard drives, ledgers, passports, and photographs.

But one item stood apart.

A small wooden box.

Samuel handed it to Michael.

"Emily told me to give you this only if you finally learned to regret what you did."

Michael slowly opened it.

Inside lay the worn-out wedding ring he had placed on Emily's finger twenty-one years earlier.

Beneath it was a short handwritten note.

Michael...

If you're holding this, then your heart finally came home.

Don't spend the rest of your life asking me for forgiveness.

Spend it becoming the man Lily deserves.

Michael broke down completely.

He pressed the ring against his forehead and sobbed without restraint.

But before anyone could speak...

A deafening gunshot shattered the silence.

The window behind Samuel exploded.

A red laser sight swept across the room.

Someone outside shouted:

"Kill the witness. Leave no survivors."

Samuel's face turned grim.

"They found us."

As black SUVs surrounded the abandoned station and armed men poured into the darkness, Lily realized one terrifying truth—

The conspiracy hadn't ended with Richard Harper.

May you like

It was still alive.
