Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Cassandra froze on the carpet, her entire body shaking violently. Slowly, she turned around, her face pale, tears streaking her expensive makeup.
âMarcus⌠please,â she begged, raising her hands. âThey made me do it! Wells⌠Wells forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't help him transfer the money!â
âYou lying bitch!â Wells screamed, scrambling backward against the wall. âIt was your idea! You found the buyer! You said the girl was useless!â
Marcus didn't blink. He handed Lily to Viktor, who gently lifted the young girl and stepped out into the hallway, shielding her eyes from the gruesome scene.
âKeep her downstairs,â Marcus instructed Viktor calmly. âEnsure the perimeter is secure.â
âUnderstood, boss,â Viktor said, carrying Lily down the grand staircase.
Once the door was closed, Marcus turned back to the two traitors. He pulled a heavy wooden chair from the vanity desk, dragged it into the center of the room, and sat down calmly.
âForty-five million,â Marcus said softly, resting his hands on his knees. âThatâs what you thought my daughterâs life was worth.â
âMarcus, listen to me!â Wells pleaded, crawling toward him on his hands and knees. âThe money is still in the offshore account! I can transfer it back! Every single cent! Just let me live!â
âThe money?â Marcus chuckledâa dry, terrifying sound. âYou think this is about the money, Richard? I made forty-five million before breakfast last Tuesday. Money is paper.â
He leaned forward, his dark eyes boring into Wellsâ soul.
âYou brought wolves into my home. You laid a hand on my child.â
Marcus raised the gun and shot Richard Wells once through the kneecap.
BANG!
A deafening roar filled the room. Wells shrieked in agony, clutching his shattered leg as blood gushed onto the white rug.
Cassandra let out a blood-curdling scream, pressing her back against the glass doors.
âThat was for breaking into my house,â Marcus said flatly, pulling the slide back on his pistol.
He aimed at Wellsâ other leg.
âWait! WAIT!â Wells screamed through tears and agony. âThereâs more! It wasn't just us! We were taking orders!â
Marcus paused, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. âOrders from whom?â
Wells panted heavily, shock setting in. âThe⌠the federal prosecutor. Agent Miller. He promised us immunity! He told us you were never coming back from London! He set up the offshore accounts to frame you for human trafficking so the government could seize your entire estate!â
Marcusâs eyes narrowed slightly.
Agent Miller. The lead investigator who had built the federal case against him.
âMiller wanted the child,â Wells gasped, clutching his bleeding knee. âHe said if the child vanished, you would lose your mind and break your exile⌠coming back to the US where they could legally execute you for treason under the new security act!â
Marcus stood up slowly. The plot was far deeper than simple corporate greed. It was an ambuscade designed by the highest levels of federal law enforcement to put him down permanently.
Suddenly, the house was hit by massive searchlights from the outside sky.
THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD!
The heavy beat of helicopter rotors shook the mansion roof.

Through loud speakers mounted on the aircraft outside, a booming voice echoed over the Beverly Hills estate:
âMARCUS MERCER! THIS IS THE FBI! YOU ARE SURROUNDED! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP OUT WITH YOUR HANDS ABOVE YOUR HEAD!â
