Chapter 1

The digital deadbolt beeped, a sharp electronic chord slicing through the frozen silence of the kitchen at 6:15 AM.

Julian’s heavy footsteps echoed against the hardwood flooring just outside the heavy oak door. A sharp, rhythmic hammering rattled the panels.

“Sloan! Open up! Where are the prep aromas? I don't smell anything baking, and if you think you can slack off just because it's early morning, you're out of your mind! My mother’s guests are arriving at noon sharp, and if a single plate is missing, you’re sleeping on the freezing concrete tonight!”

I stood calmly by the marble island, wearing my worn-out cashmere sweater and a neutral, unbothered expression. With my left hand, I carefully adjusted the hidden lapel pin camera streaming live video directly to Darcy’s secure cloud server. With my right hand, I carried a massive industrial trash bag stuffed tight with folded kitchen linens, garbage, and leftover dry ingredients from the pantry.

I reached out, threw the heavy deadbolt, and swung the oak door wide open.

Julian stumbled forward, his face twisted into an ugly, contorted mask of pure rage. His hand was raised, ready to deliver a backhand slap to my face, but he froze inches away when he saw my cold, unblinking stare.

“What is this?” Julian snarled, his eyes darting wildly around the pristine, completely empty kitchen counters. No flour dust. No chopping boards. No bubbling pots. “You haven’t even started! Have you lost your mind? Mother will be here in less than six hours! Are you trying to sabotage us?”

“I can’t cook sixty dishes in this kitchen, Julian,” I replied, my voice disturbingly soft, level, and devoid of the usual cowering fear that usually fed his ego. “The oven temperature fluctuations ruin the slow-braised cuts. The spices you bought are cheap supermarket garbage. If your mother wants a true sixty-course imperial heritage jubilee, I have to go to the high-end specialty market downtown. Right now. Or nothing gets made.”

Julian sneered, his chest puffing out with absolute arrogance as he looked down at me like an insect. He truly believed he had completely broken my spirit.

“Fine! Take my secondary debit card, but don't you dare try any tricks!” Julian barked, tossing a sleek black card onto the counter. “You have exactly two hours. If you aren't back by nine o'clock with every single ingredient, I’ll call the police, report you for abandoning the marital home, and throw every single piece of your clothing into the alley dumpster!”

“Don't worry, Julian,” I murmured, a razor-sharp smile cutting across my lips that made him visibly hesitate for a split second before his arrogance took over again. “You’ll get exactly what you deserve today. Every single dish.”

I grabbed my coat, walked past him without a backward glance, and slipped out of the luxury condo. The moment the heavy elevator doors slid shut, hiding his smug face from my view, I pulled out my phone and dialed Darcy.

“The trap is set,” I whispered into the receiver. “I’m on my way to your penthouse. Let the games begin.”
