Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The neon lights of Washington D.C. blurred past the window of the rideshare as the heavy silence of the night pressed against my chest. My phone vibrated relentlessly in my palm, a digital heartbeat of panic. Thane’s name flashed across the screen for the twelfth time. I silenced it, tossing the device onto the seat beside me, my mind racing through the fragments of the evening.
Evangeline’s hatred hadn't been spontaneous. It had the calculated, rehearsed precision of a trap. People who truly believe they are superior do not launch public smear campaigns over a platter of short ribs; they simply dismiss you with a cold glance. Her goal wasn't just to put me in my place—it was to provoke an extreme reaction. She needed me to walk out. She needed Thane isolated, weak, and pliant.
My phone lit up again, but this time, it wasn't Thane.
The caller ID displayed an unknown local number. Frowning, I swiped to answer, pressing the phone to my ear.
"Eloan?" a strained, trembling voice whispered. It sounded like an old woman fighting against a chokehold of terror.
"Who is this?" I demanded, my instincts immediately flaring.
"Don't hang up," the voice pleaded, muffled by the sound of shuffling fabric and a distant, clicking lock. "I only have a minute before Evangeline’s security detail finishes their perimeter check. I was the head housekeeper at the Georgetown estate for fourteen years. I watched Thane grow up. And I watched what they did to the woman who came before you."
The blood rushed in my ears, drowning out the hum of the car engine. "What are you talking about? Who came before me?"
May you like
"You aren't Thane's first wife, Eloan," the voice whispered, cracking with emotion. "And the short ribs weren't thrown away because of Calliope's laziness. That food was a test. A test to see if you would quietly accept what is baked into the foundation of that family. Listen to me very carefully: your marriage license isn't a legal document. It's a death warrant. If you go back there, you won't leave alive."
The line clicked dead. A dial tone buzzed in my ear, cold and final, leaving me sitting in the dark car with a terrifying truth unfurls in the shadows.
