Chapter 1

The afternoon sun bathed Puerto Vallarta in a brilliant orange glow as it melted into the Pacific Ocean. But for Teresa Villaseñor, the light disappeared the moment her cellphone vibrated on the marble countertop.
When she answered, the voice of her only son, Diego, carried none of the concern he usually showed whenever he needed money.
Instead, it was sharp...
Excited...
Almost cruel.
With chilling confidence, Diego delivered the shocking news.
He was getting married the very next day to Vanessa, the woman who, in less than a year, had managed to drive a wedge between him and his own mother.
But the wedding wasn't the worst part.
With a nervous laugh, Diego casually revealed that he had emptied every one of Teresa's bank accounts...
And that the luxury beachfront condominium she had spent decades building no longer belonged to her.
Using the power of attorney she had signed months earlier during a serious health crisis, Diego had sold the property that very morning.
"The new owners move in thirty days, Mom," he said coldly.
"So you'd better start packing."
"See you... or maybe not."
Then he hung up.
Teresa remained frozen.
At sixty-four years old, she suddenly felt the weight of every sacrifice she'd ever made pressing down on her shoulders.
She slowly looked around the apartment.
Every wall held memories of a lifetime of hard work.
She hadn't been born wealthy.
Together with her late husband, Ernesto, she had started with nothing more than a tiny neighborhood bakery in the heart of Jalisco.
She remembered waking up every morning at four.
The smell of fresh yeast.
The suffocating heat of the ovens that had left permanent scars on her arms.
They worked seven days a week.
No vacations.
No shortcuts.
They saved every peso so their son would never know hunger or hardship.
That little bakery eventually grew into a chain of twelve neighborhood grocery stores.
After Ernesto passed away twelve years earlier, Teresa sold the entire business and invested wisely in real estate.
Her only mistake...
Had been loving her son too much.
Diego had mistaken generosity...
For weakness.
From an early age, Diego lived like the classic spoiled rich kid.
He attended one of Mexico's most expensive law schools, yet never developed the discipline to practice law.
He preferred designer suits...
Luxury watches...
And sports cars...
All paid for by his mother because she believed she was helping him build his future.
But everything truly began to fall apart when Vanessa Alcázar entered his life.
Vanessa was a social media influencer obsessed with status.
She measured people's worth by their follower count...
And the limit on their credit cards.
The very first time she entered Teresa's home, she showed no interest in meeting her future mother-in-law.
Instead...
She quietly evaluated the paintings on the walls...
The diamond rings...
And every expensive possession inside the house.
The betrayal had actually begun six months earlier.
Teresa had developed severe pneumonia and spent ten days hospitalized, relying on oxygen to breathe.
During one of those difficult days, Diego appeared beside her hospital bed looking like the perfect, devoted son.
He placed several documents in front of her.
"They're just insurance papers and building maintenance forms, Mom."
"Sign here so you won't have to worry about anything."
Weak from fever...
Barely able to concentrate...
And trusting her own son without question...
Teresa signed.
They weren't insurance forms.
They were a broad power of attorney granting authority over lawsuits, finances, collections...
And full control over her assets.
Diego simply waited until she recovered.
Then he carried out the final blow.
After the phone call...
Teresa didn't cry.
Instead, she quietly walked into her study.
Behind an old family portrait...
She opened a hidden safe.
From inside, she removed a blue folder...
One Diego had never known existed.
As she carefully read the documents inside...
A bitter smile slowly appeared on her face.
In his arrogance...
And greed...
Her son had just dug his own legal grave.
Diego believed that because he was a lawyer...
He knew everything.
But he had forgotten one important fact.
His mother had survived some of Mexico's worst financial crises...
Not through luck...
But through caution...
Patience...
And experience.
Teresa poured herself a glass of tequila.
She stared out at the ocean.
Then she made her decision.
She would not call Diego.
She would not beg him for mercy.
She would let the wedding begin.
Because the gift she planned to bring to the altar...
Would not come wrapped in elegant paper.
It would arrive...
May you like
In the hands of justice.
I can't believe what's about to happen next...
