Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The crowd erupted into a chaotic frenzy of whispers, gasps, and the frantic clicking of smartphone cameras. High-society guests who had been sipping champagne seconds ago were now backing away from the altar as if Diego were afflicted with the plague.
Vanessa’s mother rushed forward, her face flushed with embarrassment. "Diego! What is this nonsense? Explain this right now! Our family name cannot be dragged into a public scandal!"
"It’s a mistake! It’s all a misunderstanding!" Diego shouted, his voice cracking as he looked desperately at the federal agents. He tried to adopt his authoritative lawyer persona, though he was shaking so violently he could barely stand. "I am a licensed attorney! I hold a valid, legally executed power of attorney signed by my mother herself. Everything I have done is within the full boundaries of the law. You have no legal right to disrupt this private event!"
Judge Vargas stepped forward, adjusting his spectacles as he pulled a certified document from a leather briefcase.
"You may have graduated from law school, Diego, but you clearly failed the course on corporate compliance," the Judge said, his voice dripping with professional disdain. "The power of attorney you obtained through malicious deception inside a hospital room only granted you control over Teresa’s personal estate. However, the beachfront condominium you attempted to sell yesterday morning at 9:00 AM does not belong to Teresa Villaseñor as an individual."
Diego frowned, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of his neck. "What are you talking about? Her name is on the deed!"
"It was on the deed, twelve years ago," Teresa intervened, stepping up the altar stairs, her crimson dress rustling against the white rose petals scattered on the floor. "Before your father died, we transferred all our primary real estate assets into an irrevocable family trust managed by a corporate board. To sell that property, you needed the explicit, notarized signature of the trust’s chief legal executor."
Teresa turned to look at the crowd, her voice rising so everyone could hear. "My son thought he was being clever. He paid a corrupt notary named Roberto Gomez five hundred thousand pesos to forge a corporate authorization document. What Diego didn't know is that Roberto Gomez has been under federal investigation for money laundering for the past eight months."
The lead federal agent stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Mr. Villaseñor, the wire transfer you’ve been waiting for all morning didn't come from a foreign investor. The 'buyer' of your mother's condominium was an undercover federal asset tracking Notary Gomez’s illegal transactions. Your offshore account has been flagged, frozen, and seized by the federal government as of two hours ago."
Vanessa let out a piercing scream. "Frozen?! What do you mean frozen?! The caterers! The designer! The diamonds I'm wearing! Diego, tell me the money is still there! Tell me we're still going to Paris!"
"There is no money, Vanessa," Teresa said, looking at her future daughter-in-law with pity. "The down payment Diego used to reserve this beautiful estate came from my federal tax reserve account. By moving that money without authorization, he committed federal tax evasion. The owner of this estate has already been notified that the payment bounced. In approximately ten minutes, the power to this entire facility will be shut off, and you will all be trespassing."
As if on cue, Vanessa’s personal assistant ran up to the altar, her face pale. "Vanessa! The livestream... the sponsors are dropping us! Brands are releasing statements canceling your contracts! The chat is calling you a fraud!"
"Turn it off! Turn it off!" Vanessa screamed, slapping the phone out of her assistant's hand. The device shattered on the marble floor, a perfect metaphor for the glamorous life she had meticulously manufactured.
Diego backed away toward the edge of the cliffside altar, looking down at the jagged rocks and crashing waves below, then back at the federal agents closing in. For a split second, he looked like he was considering jumping.

"Don't do anything more foolish than you already have, Diego," Teresa said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper meant only for him. "You wanted to be a man who commands respect? Now you will learn what it means to pay for the life you stole."
HOOK FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER: Desperate and cornered, Diego turns on Vanessa, accusing her of forcing his hand to steal the money. As the two lovers violently tear each other apart in front of the cameras, the corrupt notary public arrives—not to save Diego, but in the custody of federal police, ready to testify against him in exchange for a reduced sentence.
