Chapter 5 - The Bitter Harvest of Betrayal

"This is your fault!" Diego roared, suddenly turning on Vanessa like a cornered animal. The mask of the devoted, deeply-in-love fiancé had completely shattered. He pointed a trembling, manic finger at her beautiful white dress. "You wanted the three-million-peso wedding! You wanted the mansion in Conchas Chinas! You told me if I couldn't provide the lifestyle you deserved, you’d find someone else who would! I did this for you!"
The guests gasped, several of them recording the entire meltdown on their personal devices. The "wedding of the century" had officially transformed into the public execution of two social socialites.
Vanessa’s jaw dropped, her eyes flashing with venom. "For me?! Don't you dare blame your pathetic criminal incompetence on me, Diego! You told me you were a brilliant lawyer! You told me your mother was a senile old woman who begged you to take over the family fortune because she couldn't handle it anymore! You lied to me! You’re not a wealthy businessman—you’re just a spoiled thief who couldn't even rob his own mother correctly!"
"I gave you everything!" Diego screamed, stepping toward her, his face twisted in rage. "I bought you the car! I paid for your followers! I funded your fake, plastic life with my mother's blood and sweat!"
"And look where it got you!" Vanessa spat back, tearing her diamond-encrusted veil off her head and throwing it at his feet. "You're pathetic! I never loved you, Diego! I loved the man I thought had the power to buy this city. Turns out, you're just a little boy playing dress-up in his daddy's suits."
Before Diego could respond, the sound of heavy boots echoing on the marble terrace drew everyone’s attention back to the entrance. Two more federal officers arrived, escorting a man whose expensive suit was disheveled and covered in sweat. His hands were bound tightly behind his back in plastic zip-ties.
It was Roberto Gomez, the prestigious notary public Diego had bragged about knowing for years.
"Diego," Gomez groaned, his voice trembling as he refused to meet the younger man's eyes. "It's over. They caught me at the airport. I gave them everything. I gave them the modified power of attorney, the forged corporate minutes, and the audio recordings of you offering me the bribe. I'm not going to prison for thirty years just to save your skin."
Diego felt the last remnants of air leave his lungs. He looked at the notary, then at Judge Vargas, and finally, his eyes landed on his mother.
Teresa stood perfectly still. She didn't look angry anymore. She didn't look vengeful. She looked completely detached, as if she were watching a stranger receive a long-overdue sentence.
"Mom... please," Diego whimpered, dropping to his knees right there on the white carpet, his midnight-blue tuxedo staining against the crushed flower petals. The arrogant lawyer was gone; he was a terrified child again, begging for protection from the consequences of his own actions. "Please, Mom. Tell them to stop. We can fix this. I'll give the money back. I'll cancel the sale. I'll do whatever you want. Don't let them take me to prison. You know what happens to lawyers in federal penitentiaries. They'll kill me, Mom. Please!"
Vanessa sneered down at him, stepping away in disgust. "Look at you. Crawling like a dog. Disgusting."
Teresa walked slowly over to where her son knelt. She looked down at him for a long, agonizing moment. For a split second, the guests wondered if the maternal instinct would take over, if she would break down and shield her only child from the law.
Instead, Teresa reached down and gently removed the heavy gold signet ring from Diego's finger—the ring that had belonged to her late husband, Ernesto. Diego had stolen it from her safe months ago.
"You are right, Diego," Teresa said, her voice dropping to a whisper that cut through him like a razor blade. "You did do this for her. But you forgot the most important rule your father and I lived by: wealth built on the destruction of others will always consume its creator. You didn't just sell my house, Diego. You sold your own soul. And I cannot buy back what no longer exists."
She stood up, turning her back on him completely.
