Chapter 1 - The Shadow of Lucian Moretti

"Ellie..." Arthur groaned from the floor, his voice a pathetic whimper that scraped against Elena’s raw nerves. He reached a trembling, blood-stained hand toward her, but the heavy leather boot of a guard stepped squarely onto his fingers, grinding them into the hardwood. Arthur let out a choked scream.
"Stop it! Please, stop!" Elena cried, throwing herself forward. The guard's massive arm caught her across the chest, holding her back effortlessly. She twisted in his grip, her wet hair flying across her face, her eyes searching the dimly lit basement for the source of the terrifying authority in the room.
Sitting in a high-backed leather chair just beyond the ring of light was a man who didn't seem to belong to the violence around him, yet clearly commanded every drop of it.
Lucian Moretti.
He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that looked pristine despite the grime of the basement. A single gold signet ring caught the low light as he casually flicked the ash from a custom-blended cigarette. His features were striking—sharp, aristocratic, and utterly devoid of human warmth. His eyes were the color of stagnant river water, cold and calculation-driven.
"You must be Elena," Lucian said. His voice was a low, smooth baritone that vibrated through the damp air, carrying a terrifying stillness. "The brave little daughter who cleans up Arthur's disasters."
"Let him go," Elena said, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to sound strong. "Whatever he owes you, I’ll pay it. I have savings. I work at the hotel. I can get a loan—"
Lucian let out a soft, mocking chuckle that cut her off like a knife. He stood up, towering over the room. The guards instantly shifted, their postures rigid with absolute deference. Lucian walked slowly into the light, his gaze dropping to evaluate her soaked coat, her torn shoe, and the fierce, protective anger burning in her eyes.
"Your father owes me five hundred thousand dollars, Elena," Lucian murmured, stopping mere inches from her. The scent of expensive cologne, tobacco, and rain enveloped her. "He gambled away money he didn't have, using his life as collateral. Do you have half a million dollars in your hotel laundry budget?"
Elena’s heart stopped. Five hundred thousand. The lease notice under her saucer at home—the dream she had worked seven years to buy—was for a mere twelve hundred a month. She was looking at an amount of money that didn't even exist in her world.
"He doesn't have it," Elena whispered, her defenses crumbling as tears finally spilled over her lashes. "Please. If you kill him, you get nothing. Give us time. A payment plan. Anything."

Lucian reached out, his long, scarred fingers gently catching a wet strand of hair behind her ear. Elena flinched at the unexpected warmth of his touch, but he didn't let go. His thumb brushed against her cheekbone, tracking the path of her tear. His eyes narrowed, a dark, sudden curiosity replacing his coldness.
"I don't do payment plans, little bird," Lucian whispered, his thumb pressing firmly against her lower lip. "But I do keep things of value. And looking at you... I think I’ve found something worth far more than five hundred thousand dollars."
