Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the third-floor workshop, the smell of gunpowder and blood replaced the usual scent of lavender and starch. Lucian lay across her heavy cutting table, his face pale, sweat bead-lined at his temples.

The estate doctor had given Elena the necessary medical supplies—sutures, antiseptics, and local anesthetics—but Lucian had refused to let the doctor stay in the room.

"You have to do it, Elena," Lucian whispered, his grey eyes locked onto hers with a desperate, feverish intensity. "I only trust your hands."

Elena swallowed the lump of fear in her throat. She had mended silk, wool, and leather, but she had never mended human flesh. Yet, looking at the man who had taken two bullets to protect her, she realized something terrifying: she didn't want him to die. The monster had crawled under her skin, and she had fallen completely, undeniably in love with him.

"This is going to hurt, Lucian," she said, her hands surprisingly steady as she prepared the curved medical needle and silk suture thread.

"I've survived worse, little bird," he muttered, a faint, painful smile touching his lips.

Elena worked with meticulous care. She cleaned the wounds, applied the antiseptic, and began to stitch the torn flesh of his shoulder together. Every time he flinched, her heart broke, but she kept her eyes focused on the work, pulling the silk thread tight, making the cleanest, most precise stitches she had ever made in her life.

By the time she finished dressing the wounds, the sun was beginning to rise through the large windows, casting a golden light across the room.

Lucian lay still, his breathing shallow but steady. He reached up with his uninjured arm, catching her jaw and pulling her down until her lips were mere inches from his.

"You saved me," he whispered, his voice thick with exhaustion and an all-consuming devotion. "You are my anchor, Elena. I brought you here to own you... but I think you're the one who owns me now."

Elena looked down at him, a tear dropping onto his cheek. "You're a monster, Lucian. You rule through fear and blood."

May you like

"I am," he agreed softly, his thumb wiping her tear away. "But I am a monster who would burn the entire world to ash just to keep you warm. Stay with me. Not because of the contract. Not because of your father. Stay because you belong beside me."

She didn't answer with words. She leaned down and pressed her lips to his, a soft, desperate surrender that sealed her fate far more securely than the paper contract ever could.
