Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

By the second month, Elena had become an unintended ghost within the mansion. Because she was always quiet, always moving through corridors with garments over her arm, the guards and capos often forgot she was there.

Late one evening, she was returning a batch of pressed shirts to the valet’s station near Lucian’s executive office. The door was slightly ajar, and the sound of angry voices leaked out.

"The Petrov syndicate is pushing hard on the northern docks, Lucian," Marco, his primary underboss, was saying. "They know we’ve been distracted. They found out about the girl you brought in from the laundry block. They think she’s your weakness."

Elena froze in the hallway, the silk shirts heavy in her arms.

"She is a servant," Lucian’s voice cut through the room, cold as ice. "Nothing more. If the Russians think they can use a seamstress to leverage the Moretti family, let them try. I will personally string their intestines across the pier."

"And if they take her?" Marco pressed.

A heavy silence followed. When Lucian spoke again, the sheer, unbridled malice in his tone made Elena’s blood run cold.

"If anyone touches a single hair on her head, Marco... I won't just kill them. I will erase their entire bloodline from the history books. Elena belongs to me. And I do not lose what is mine."

Elena backed away slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs. She returned to her workshop, locking the door behind her. She sank to the floor, her hands trembling as she pulled her knees to her chest.

He didn't love her. He didn't even know her. It was an obsession of absolute ownership—a monster who had decided she was his favorite toy, and woe to anyone who tried to take it from his cage.
