Chapter 9 - The Debt is Paid

Four months later, the war with the Petrov syndicate was over. Lucian had systematically dismantled their entire operation, securing absolute peace for the Moretti family.

Arthur Hart had been discharged from the clinic, fully sober and living in a beautiful, quiet cottage in upstate Illinois, funded entirely by a trust fund Lucian had set up for him. Arthur was safe, healthy, and finally away from the vices that had destroyed his life.

Elena sat at the kitchen table in the mansion, looking at the original contract she had signed. The twelve months weren't over, but the world around them had changed completely.

Lucian walked into the room, wearing a sharp new navy suit she had tailored for him the week before. He looked healthy, powerful, and completely at peace. He took the contract from her hands and, without a word, tossed it into the roaring fireplace.

Elena watched the cream paper turn to black ash. "What are you doing? I still have six months left."

"The debt is paid, Elena," Lucian said, walking over to stand behind her. He placed his large hands on her shoulders, leaning down to press a kiss against the crown of her head. "Your father is safe. You are a free woman. You can leave this house today if you wish. You can take the money I’ve placed in your account and buy that little shop you always wanted."

Elena stood up, turning to face him. Her heart felt heavy, yet incredibly full. "You're letting me go?"

Lucian’s storm-grey eyes filled with a profound, painful vulnerability. He reached into his pocket, extracting a small, velvet box. Inside was a stunning, flawless emerald ring, surrounded by tiny, delicate diamond chips shaped like a nest of thorns.

"I am letting you choose," Lucian corrected softly. "If you walk out that door, my men will protect your shop for the rest of your life, and I will never trouble you again. But if you stay... you stay as my wife. You stay as the dark queen of the Moretti family. The choice is yours, little bird."

Elena looked at the ring, then up at the man who had become her entire world. The monster who had learned how to be gentle just for her.

"I don't want a shop two streets from the laundry blocks anymore, Lucian," she whispered, a beautiful smile breaking across her face.

Lucian’s face fell slightly. "No?"

"No," she said, stepping into his arms and wrapping her hands around his neck. "I want a shop right here in the city center. And I want the most feared man in Chicago to carry my sewing kits every single day."

Lucian let out a rich, triumphant laugh, sweeping her up into his arms and kissing her with a fierce, burning passion that echoed through the quiet house.
