CHAPTER 1 — The Day My Husband Thought He Had Already Won

"The company... the mansion... the cars..."
Julian Vance's voice echoed through the courtroom with the confidence of a king announcing a public execution.
"They're all mine now."
His smile never reached his eyes.
"You'll walk out of here with nothing."
A few people in the audience exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Others looked at me with pity.
They thought they were watching another wealthy woman lose everything to a ruthless husband.
None of them knew they were about to witness the beginning of the biggest corporate scandal the city had ever seen.
I didn't answer him.
I didn't even blink.
That bothered Julian more than any scream ever could.
For years, he had lived to see me afraid.
Today...
I refused to give him that satisfaction.
His mistress, Nora Sinclair, stood proudly beside him wearing a flawless white designer dress.
She rested one perfectly manicured hand on his arm as though she had already become Mrs. Vance.
Every camera captured her smile.
She loved the attention.
The headlines.
The victory.
What she didn't know...
Was that every flash of those cameras would soon become evidence against her.
Julian's attorney confidently pushed another stack of documents toward the judge.
"Your Honor, ownership records are perfectly clear."
"Vance Medical Technologies belongs entirely to my client."
"The marital residence is under his name."
"The financial accounts contain virtually no remaining marital assets."
He smiled.
"My client simply requests the court finalize today's judgment."
The judge slowly reviewed the paperwork.
Everything appeared legal.
Everything appeared complete.
Everything appeared impossible to challenge.
Marcus Hale...
My attorney...
Didn't move.
He simply watched me.
He had represented billionaires.
Politicians.
Professional athletes.
Yet even he looked nervous.
"You still have time," he whispered.
"Once we start... there's no going back."
I looked toward Julian.
He was already celebrating.
He leaned toward Nora.
"I told you she'd fold."
Nora laughed softly.
"I almost feel sorry for her."
Julian chuckled.
"You shouldn't."
"She was always weak."
Weak.
The word echoed inside my head.
Weak...
After surviving twelve surgeries.
Weak...
After waking up in hospital rooms more times than I could count.
Weak...
After spending three years secretly collecting evidence against the man everyone called a genius.
No.
I wasn't weak.
I was patient.
The judge adjusted his glasses.
"Mrs. Vance..."
"Do you wish to respond before I issue today's ruling?"
Every eye turned toward me.
I slowly stood.
The silence felt heavy enough to crush the room.
Even the reporters stopped typing.
Julian smiled wider.
Finally...
He thought I was about to beg.
Instead...
I reached for the buttons on my gray coat.
Click.
Click.
Click.
One by one.
The courtroom watched in complete confusion.
Julian frowned.
"What are you doing?"
I didn't answer.
I slid the coat from my shoulders.
Gasps exploded throughout the room.
Long scars crossed my back.
Others wrapped around my ribs.
Deep surgical lines disappeared beneath the collar of my blouse.
They weren't accidents.
They were survival.
Nora instinctively stepped backward.
"Oh my God..."
Someone in the audience whispered,
"Who did that to her?"
Julian's face turned white.
"Iris..."
His voice cracked.
"No."
The judge slowly stood.
"Mrs. Vance..."
I placed both hands on the witness table.
My voice remained calm.
"You've spent the last hour discussing property."
"I came here to discuss attempted murder."
The courtroom froze.
Julian's attorney shot to his feet.
"Objection!"
Marcus finally stood beside me.
"We have evidence."
The judge stared at us.
"What kind of evidence?"
Marcus looked directly at Julian.
"The kind that sends powerful men to prison."
Julian stopped breathing.
Because he recognized the black folder Marcus placed on the table.
He had burned that folder himself...
Ten years ago.
May you like
Or at least...
He thought he had.
