CHAPTER 4 — The Witness Nobody Expected

The courthouse had emptied hours ago.

Yet no one left.

Outside, hundreds of reporters crowded behind police barricades, shouting questions every time the doors opened.

Inside Courtroom Seven, Judge Eleanor Whitmore looked toward the federal prosecutor.

"Proceed."

Julian sat in handcuffs.

For the first time in his life, he couldn't buy his way out of silence.

The prosecutor stood.

"The government calls its next witness."

The courtroom doors opened.

An elderly woman slowly entered, leaning on a polished wooden cane.

Julian frowned.

"I don't know her."

The woman smiled.

"Oh, Julian..."

"You've forgotten a great many people."

She stepped into the witness box.

"My name is Evelyn Carter."

"I served on the Board of Directors of Vance Medical Technologies twenty-three years ago."

Marcus looked surprised.

Even Iris had never met the woman.

Judge Whitmore nodded.

"You may continue."

Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed an old leather journal.

"This belonged to Richard Ashcroft."

Iris froze.

Her father's name echoed through the courtroom.

Julian's breathing became uneven.

The prosecutor asked quietly,

"Who was Richard Ashcroft?"

Evelyn looked directly at every juror.

"He wasn't simply Iris's father."

"He founded the technology that built Vance Medical."

Gasps spread across the room.

"The company was never Julian's creation."

"It was Richard's life's work."

She opened the journal.

Every page contained handwritten research notes...

Patent numbers...

Prototype sketches...

And one final entry dated just weeks before Richard's death.

'If anything happens to me, Iris must never trust Julian. He is not the man he pretends to be.'

Julian slammed both fists onto the defense table.

"That's forged!"

The prosecutor smiled.

"We had the journal authenticated by three independent forensic laboratories."

Marcus slowly looked toward Iris.

"Your father knew."

Tears filled Iris's eyes.

Not from grief.

From relief.

For ten years she had wondered if her father died believing she had married a good man.

Now she finally knew the truth.

He had tried to warn her.

But someone had made sure she never received the journal.

Then Evelyn said the words that changed everything.

"Richard Ashcroft wasn't Julian's first victim."

The courtroom exploded with whispers.

Julian closed his eyes.

He knew exactly what she was about to reveal.
