CHAPTER 2 — The Folder That Shouldn't Exist

Julian's confidence vanished so quickly it was almost frightening.

His hands began trembling.

"No..."

he whispered.

"That's impossible."

Marcus slowly opened the black leather folder.

Inside were photographs.

Hospital records.

Insurance claims.

Private emails.

Medical reports.

And one small silver flash drive.

The judge looked confused.

"What exactly am I looking at?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"The beginning of a pattern."

He handed the first photograph to the bailiff.

The image appeared on the courtroom monitor.

A burned luxury SUV wrapped around a concrete barrier.

Date:

Eight years earlier.

Official Cause:

Brake failure.

Marcus spoke.

"Mrs. Vance survived."

"Mr. Vance collected a forty-million-dollar insurance payout."

Julian immediately stood.

"It was an accident!"

Marcus ignored him.

Another photograph appeared.

A private yacht.

Destroyed by fire.

Official Cause:

Fuel leak.

Insurance Payment:

Twenty-two million dollars.

Again...

I survived.

Again...

Julian became richer.

Whispers spread across the courtroom.

The reporters stopped taking notes.

They were simply staring.

Marcus continued.

"A private helicopter crash."

"Mountain cabin explosion."

"Carbon monoxide leak."

Every incident ended the same way.

I nearly died.

Julian became wealthier.

Nora slowly released Julian's hand.

Her breathing became uneven.

"You... never told me about any of this."

Julian grabbed her wrist.

"They're twisting everything."

But Marcus wasn't finished.

He placed another document before the judge.

"This..."

he said,

"is the report that never reached law enforcement."

The judge frowned.

"Why?"

"Because someone paid five million dollars for it to disappear."

The courtroom erupted.

Julian slammed his fist against the table.

"That's a lie!"

Marcus calmly smiled.

"The forensic investigator who accepted that bribe is waiting outside."

"He requested witness protection three weeks ago."

Julian's face completely drained of color.

Then...

The courtroom doors opened.

An elderly man slowly walked inside.

Former Detective Samuel Brooks.

The detective who had officially ruled every one of my accidents...

Unavoidable.

He walked directly toward the witness stand.

Without looking at Julian...

He raised his right hand.

"I lied."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Tears filled the detective's eyes.

"I buried evidence."

"I changed reports."

"I accepted money."

"And every payment came from Julian Vance."

Nora stumbled backward.

"You told me your wife was mentally unstable."

Julian couldn't answer.

Because another surprise had just entered the courtroom.

A woman wearing a federal investigator's badge.

Behind her...

Six armed agents.

The lead investigator placed a sealed warrant on the judge's bench.

"We respectfully request this hearing be suspended."

The judge looked shocked.

"On what grounds?"

The investigator answered with four words.

"Organized financial homicide investigation."

Nobody breathed.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Mrs. Vance..."

"You've waited ten years."

"It's time."

I nodded once.

Then reached into my handbag.

There was one final piece of evidence.

The evidence Julian feared more than anything.

A voice recording.

Recorded the night he thought I would never wake up again.
