CHAPTER 1 — THE FUNERAL THAT STARTED A WAR

The rain never stopped the day Richard Whitmore was buried.

America knew him as the steel magnate who built Whitmore Industries into one of the largest construction empires in the country.

To his children...

He was simply Dad.

Thousands gathered outside St. Andrew's Cathedral in Boston.

Politicians.

CEOs.

Celebrities.

News helicopters circled overhead.

But inside the front pew...

Nobody cried.

Not really.

Thirty-nine-year-old Michael Whitmore, the oldest son, stared at the mahogany casket with the expression of a man calculating numbers instead of mourning.

Beside him sat his younger brother, Daniel, who hadn't spoken a word since arriving.

Across the aisle was their sister...

Emily Whitmore.

She wore no diamonds.

No expensive designer dress.

Only a simple black coat and the silver watch their father had given her when she turned eighteen.

Everyone whispered.

"She's probably getting almost nothing."

"Richard always favored the boys."

"Michael has been running the company for years."

No one noticed Emily quietly placing a white lily on the casket.

Hidden beneath it...

A small envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

"Dad... I hope they never become strangers."

She had no idea how impossible that wish already was.

Three hours later...

The Whitmore family entered the conference room of Hawthorne & Briggs Law Firm.

Every major television network waited outside.

Because today...

Richard Whitmore's last will would finally be read.

Attorney Charles Hawthorne adjusted his glasses.

"There are additional instructions from your father."

Michael smiled confidently.

"I'm sure they're straightforward."

Charles hesitated.

"I'm not so certain."

The room became silent.

Richard's recorded video suddenly appeared on the large screen.

The billionaire smiled warmly.

"If you're watching this..."

"It means I'm gone."

"I know exactly what you're thinking."

Michael laughed.

"Dad always loved dramatic entrances."

Then Richard looked directly into the camera.

"If any one of my children attempts to challenge this will..."

"...they immediately lose every dollar."

Michael's smile disappeared.

Richard continued.

"My greatest fear was never losing my fortune."

"It was watching my children lose each other because of it."

Charles unfolded the official will.

"The estate is valued at..."

"$4.8 billion."

Daniel inhaled sharply.

Emily lowered her eyes.

Michael leaned forward.

Charles continued reading.

"The company..."

"...is not being left to my oldest son."

Michael blinked.

"What?"

"It is not being divided equally."

His face turned pale.

"What did you just say?"

Charles swallowed.

"Richard Whitmore has left..."

"Fifty-one percent of Whitmore Industries..."

"...to Emily Whitmore."

The room exploded.

Michael slammed both hands onto the table.

"THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!"

"You forged it!"

Emily looked just as shocked.

"I didn't know..."

Michael pointed at her.

"You manipulated him!"

"You planned this!"

Daniel stood.

"Enough!"

Michael shoved him backward.

Security rushed inside.

Reporters outside heard the shouting.

Within minutes...

Breaking News flooded every television station in America.

BILLIONAIRE'S FAMILY ERUPTS INTO CHAOS OVER $4.8 BILLION EMPIRE.

But no one knew...

The real betrayal hadn't even happened yet.

Because that same evening...

Michael secretly met with someone who had been waiting years for this opportunity.

The family attorney.

And a black leather briefcase filled with cash.
