CHAPTER 6 — "The Woman He Left for 'Someone Better' Returned to the Place Where It All Began"

Two weeks passed.
For the first time in nearly a decade, Mariana slept through the night.
She no longer reached for a phone wondering where Michael was.
She no longer invented excuses for his silence.
She no longer blamed herself for someone else's choices.
Instead, every morning began the same way.
Coffee.
A notebook.
Thirty quiet minutes planning the future of Salazar Design Group.
Business was thriving.
The company's expansion into three new states had attracted talented designers, new investors, and clients who admired Mariana's reputation for honesty.
Ironically, many of those clients had once chosen the company because of Michael.
Now they stayed because of Mariana.
One Friday afternoon, Mariana drove alone to a small neighborhood where everything had started.
A modest brick building.
Twelve years earlier, it had been her first office.
The paint had faded.
The sign was older.
But she smiled the moment she stepped inside.
Mrs. Eleanor Brooks, the retired landlord who had rented the tiny office to her all those years ago, looked up from her desk.
"Mariana?"
The elderly woman gasped.
"My goodness... look at you."
Mariana laughed and hugged her tightly.
"You were the first person who believed I could build something."
Mrs. Brooks smiled warmly.
"No."
"You built it yourself."
The two women spent nearly an hour reminiscing about the early days—when Mariana couldn't afford proper office furniture, when she painted the walls herself, and when she worked until midnight with only a folding table and a borrowed laptop.
Then Mrs. Brooks hesitated.
"I've wanted to tell you something."
She opened an old drawer and carefully removed a worn envelope.
"I found this while cleaning out the storage room after Michael moved his things years ago."
Mariana frowned.
"My things?"
Mrs. Brooks nodded.
"I thought you already knew."
Inside the envelope were unpaid invoices, warning letters from suppliers, and several personal loan notices.
Each one was addressed to Michael.
The dates were shocking.
Most had been issued during the years he constantly accused Mariana of "overspending."
She stared silently at the documents.
Every month he had criticized her for buying office supplies...
...he had secretly been drowning in personal debt.
Mrs. Brooks sighed.
"You were paying every company bill on time."
"He was hiding his own."
Mariana closed the envelope slowly.
For years she had believed she had failed him.
Now she realized he had been hiding a different life all along.
She thanked Mrs. Brooks and left with the envelope in her hands.
As she stepped into the afternoon sunlight, her phone rang.
It was her attorney.
"Mariana... you need to come to the office."
His voice sounded unusually serious.
"We've received information about Michael."
"What kind of information?"
A brief silence.
May you like
"Someone has filed a lawsuit against him."
"And what they're alleging may explain far more than either of us expected."
