CHAPTER 8 — "The Truth He Hid for Nine Years Finally Came Out—And It Changed Everything"

Mariana almost refused the meeting.
Her attorney advised against it.
Her father didn't even try to hide his opinion.
"Whatever he has to say," Gustavo said, "he should say through his lawyer."
But Michael insisted.
"No lawyers."
"No reporters."
"No Vanessa."
"Just ten minutes."
Against her better judgment, Mariana agreed.
They met in a quiet conference room inside a mediation office.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Michael looked older.
Not because of time.
Because the confidence that had once defined him was gone.
"I don't have much left," he said quietly.
"So I'll tell you the truth."
Mariana folded her hands.
"I'm listening."
Michael took a deep breath.
"I never cheated because you weren't enough."
She remained expressionless.
"I cheated because I couldn't stand living in your shadow."
The words hung in the air.
"You built everything," he continued.
"The company."
"The reputation."
"The friendships."
"Every room we entered, people respected you."
He laughed bitterly.
"And instead of being proud of you... I became jealous."
Mariana stared at him in disbelief.
"I started lying."
"At first it was small things."
"I exaggerated my role."
"I let people believe I was making the big decisions."
"And every time someone praised you..."
"...I hated myself a little more."
He lowered his head.
"Then Vanessa came along."
"She believed every lie."
"She thought I was the genius behind your success."
"So I kept lying."
"Until I couldn't tell the difference between the man I was and the man I pretended to be."
For the first time since the divorce, Michael wasn't making excuses.
He wasn't blaming Vanessa.
He wasn't blaming Mariana.
He was blaming himself.
Mariana finally asked the question she had carried for years.
"Did you ever love me?"
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"Every single day."
"Then why destroy us?"
His voice broke.
"Because I thought if I couldn't become the man you deserved..."
"...I'd rather become someone else entirely."
Silence filled the room.
Mariana felt sadness.
But not regret.
The man sitting across from her wasn't the husband she had married.
He hadn't been that man for a very long time.
She stood.
"I forgive you."
Michael looked up hopefully.
She gently continued.
"But forgiveness isn't the same as another chance."
His shoulders fell.
"I know."
As she reached the door, Michael spoke one last time.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The financial records."
"They're incomplete."
Mariana turned slowly.
"There are documents you still haven't found."
May you like
"Someone else helped hide the truth."
"And that person is about to blame everything on me."
