CHAPTER 7 — "The Stranger Walked Into Her Office Carrying a Box That Could Destroy Michael Forever"

The next morning, Mariana arrived at her attorney's office.
Waiting in the conference room was a woman she had never seen before.
She looked to be in her early forties.
Nervous.
Exhausted.
Protective of the cardboard box resting on her lap.
She stood the moment Mariana entered.
"Ms. Salazar?"
"Yes."
"My name is Linda Hayes."
"I don't expect you to forgive me for coming here."
Mariana sat across from her.
"What is this about?"
Linda took a deep breath.
"I worked as an accountant for a consulting company that handled bookkeeping for several small businesses."
She gently pushed the box across the table.
"One of those businesses belonged to Michael Bennett."
Mariana frowned.
"I thought he handled everything himself."
Linda gave a sad smile.
"That's what he wanted everyone to believe."
She opened the box.
Inside were neatly organized folders, old hard drives, and stacks of financial records.
"My company recently closed."
"As we prepared the archives, I discovered files that should never have been mixed in with ordinary bookkeeping."
Mariana looked confused.
Linda continued.
"I almost threw them away."
"Then I recognized your company's name."
The attorney carefully examined the first folder.
His expression immediately changed.
"What is it?" Mariana asked.
He slowly turned one document toward her.
It was an internal spreadsheet comparing company-approved expenses with personal purchases that had never been properly separated.
Several entries had handwritten notes questioning whether they belonged to the business at all.
The attorney remained calm.
"We don't know yet whether these records reflect mistakes, poor bookkeeping, or something more serious."
"We'll need independent experts to review everything."
Linda nodded.
"That's why I came."
"I don't want innocent people blamed for records that deserve a closer look."
Mariana looked at the woman in silence.
"You didn't have to bring these."
Linda's eyes filled with tears.
"My husband lost his business because someone once ignored financial irregularities."
"I couldn't ignore these."
As the attorney carefully packed the documents into evidence folders, his phone rang.
He listened quietly.
Then looked directly at Mariana.
"There's another development."
"What now?"
He exhaled.
"Michael has contacted us."
Mariana's heart skipped.
"What does he want?"
"He says he wants to meet."
"He claims there's one truth he's hidden from everyone..."
"...and he refuses to tell anyone except you."
Mariana looked out the conference room window.
For the first time since the divorce...
she wasn't wondering whether Michael would come back.

She was wondering...
what could possibly be left to say after everything that had already been destroyed.
