Chapter 5 - THE AMBUSH AT DOCK 42The trap was so obvious it practically screamed. But in our world, you don't ignore a challenge—you crush it.

At 1:00 AM, heavy rain poured over Dock 42 at PortMiami. Shipping containers were stacked like giant steel bricks, blocking out the light from the city skyline.

Jericho’s convoy pulled up in formation. Ten armored SUVs spilled out thirty heavily armed men in black tactical gear. Jericho stepped out, wearing a long black trench coat over his suit. Beside him, I stepped into the storm, wearing black tactical fatigues, a combat knife strapped to my thigh, and an assault rifle locked in my hands.

"Stay behind me," Jericho ordered as we walked into the center of the dark dockyard.

"I don't do 'behind', Blackwood," I replied, clicking off my weapon's safety. "I do 'side-by-side'."

A tight smile touched his lips. "Fair enough."

In the middle of the clearing stood Nikolai Volkov—a massive man with a shaved head, covered in Russian prison tattoos. Behind him stood twenty armed mercenaries, holding Jericho’s beaten lieutenants hostage.

"Jericho!" Volkov laughed, his voice booming over the sound of rain. "You brought a girl to a war?"

"I brought the woman who killed your entire vanguard in Berlin," Jericho called back, his voice cool and terrifying. "Release my men, Volkov. And maybe I let you leave this dock breathing."

Volkov smirked. "You are foolish, Blackwood. You think this was about your lieutenants? This was about getting you out of your fortress."

Suddenly, high-powered red laser sights painted Jericho’s chest. Snipers on the shipping containers.

"Drop your weapons!" Volkov roared.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't wait for Jericho’s command.

I threw myself in front of Jericho, raising my rifle and firing three quick shots into the crane operator above us, blowing out the spotlight. Darkness engulfed the dock yard.

"MOVE!" I screamed.

All hell broke loose.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the rain like strobe lights. Gunfire erupted from every direction. Jericho grabbed my arm, dragging me behind a steel shipping container as bullets ricocheted off the metal, sparking violently in the night.

"I told you to stay back!" Jericho yelled over the deafening roar of automatic fire.

"I just saved your life, Blackwood! Say thank you!" I yelled back, popping out from the corner and dropping two approaching gunmen with clean headshots.

Jericho drew his twin pistols, firing with lethal, mechanical precision. We moved together like clockwork—a deadly dance perfected in seconds. Every time a shooter flanked him, I took them down; every time I reloaded, Jericho covered my skin.

Within ten minutes, the gunfire died down. The dock was littered with Volkov's men.

Jericho walked through the smoke, stepping over bodies, until he reached Volkov, who was crawling toward a fallen handgun, bleeding from a chest wound.

Jericho placed his heavy boot onto Volkov’s wrist, pressing down until metal bone cracked. Volkov screamed in pain.

"Where is the rest of your syndicate?" Jericho demanded, aiming his gun down at Volkov’s head.

Volkov wheezed, blood spitting from his lips. He laughed insanely. "You... you think I work alone? The Ghost Syndicate... they aren't hunting Katherine... They sent her to you!"

May you like

Jericho froze. "What did you say?"

"She... she was sent to lure you out..." Volkov wheezed, his eyes wide. "The whole thing... the little girl... the restaurant... it was a setup!"
