The penthouse was secure, fortified with biometric locks and bulletproof glass, but Adrian knew it was only a matter of time before the Viper Syndicate breached the building.
"Marcus, lock down the entire perimeter. No one enters or leaves the Ashford Global tower," Adrian ordered, his eyes never leaving the two children.
Maya was sitting on a plush Italian leather sofa, looking entirely out of place. Her primary concern wasn't the men with guns; it was the baby. "Please," she begged, looking at Adrian with tears finally forming in her eyes. "She needs to eat. She's going to slide away."
Adrian immediately called his private medical team, ordering them to bring infant formula and emergency medical supplies up via the secure freight elevator. While they waited, Adrian knelt before Maya, gently pulling up her sleeve to look at the twin-headed serpent crest again.
"Who gave you this, Maya?"
"The men in the gray warehouse by the docks," she whispered. "They brought the baby to me a week ago. They said she is the 'Key.' I don't know what that means. They told me to run into your building today. They said you would take us in."
Adrian's blood ran cold. It was a setup. They hadn't just chanced upon his building. The Syndicate had used a starving child to bypass his security. But why?
The freight elevator dinged, and Dr. Evans, Adrian’s trusted family physician, rushed in with a medical kit and warm formula. Maya watched like a hawk as Dr. Evans gently fed the baby. Within minutes, the infant began to color, her tiny hands weakly grasping at the bottle.
"She's severely malnourished, Adrian, but she’s a fighter," Dr. Evans murmured, running a portable diagnostic scanner over the baby. Suddenly, the scanner beeped erratically, displaying a flashing red warning screen.
"What is it?" Adrian asked, sensing a new danger.
"Look at the bone structure scan," Dr. Evans breathed, his face turning pale. "And look at her blood type. It’s an incredibly rare phenotype. Adrian... less than ten people in the world have this blood. Your brother Julian was one of them."
Adrian felt the room spin. Julian? Julian’s wife had supposedly died in the same car crash four years ago, pregnant with their unborn child. The public narrative was that the child had died in utero.

Before Dr. Evans could explain further, the lights in the penthouse flickered and died. The backup generators failed to kick in. The heavy electronic locks on the doors clicked open.
Through the floorboards, a low, rhythmic thumping could be heard. They were coming up the stairs.
